Azure ExpressRoute pricing

Experience a fast, reliable, and private connection to Azure

ExpressRoute is a service that enables you to create private connections between Azure datacenters and infrastructure that’s on your premises or in a colocation environment. ExpressRoute connections don't go over the public internet, and offer more reliability, faster speeds, lower latencies, and higher security than typical connections over the internet.

ExpressRoute service requires deployment of:

  • ExpressRoute Circuit: ExpressRoute Circuits are deployed in peering locations or meet-me-locations and are mapped to different zones.
  • ExpressRoute Gateway: ExpressRoute Gateways are deployed in Azure region.

Apply filters to customize pricing options to your needs.

Prices are estimates only and are not intended as actual price quotes. Actual pricing may vary depending on the type of agreement entered with Microsoft, date of purchase, and the currency exchange rate. Prices are calculated based on US dollars and converted using London closing spot rates that are captured in the two business days prior to the last business day of the previous month end. If the two business days prior to the end of the month fall on a bank holiday in major markets, the rate setting day is generally the day immediately preceding the two business days. This rate applies to all transactions during the upcoming month. Sign in to the Azure pricing calculator to see pricing based on your current program/offer with Microsoft. Once connected to an ExpressRoute location, users can connect to other regions in the same geo without the need for the premium circuit, and at no additional cost over existing plan charges. For example, in North America, customers can send or retrieve data to or from any Azure region in North America without the need to pay an additional fee on top of their existing plan charges. Similarly, once connected to an ExpressRoute location in Europe, customers can send or retrieve data to or from any Azure region in Europe without the need to pay an additional fee on top of their existing plan charges.

Note: Customers may incur additional charges by their service providers to enable connectivity to ExpressRoute.

Unlimited Data Plan

All inbound and outbound data transfer is free of charge. Users are charged a single fixed monthly port fee (based on High Availability dual ports). Note: Global Reach Pricing is excluded from the Unlimited Data plan pricing.

ExpressRoute Local Circuit:

An ExpressRoute Local circuit at a specific peering location gives you access only to one or two Azure regions in or near the same metro. Specifically, you can only advertise routes (over Microsoft and private peering) from the corresponding local region of the ExpressRoute circuit and you won't be able to receive routes for other regions different than the defined Local region. See FAQ - Azure ExpressRoute | Microsoft Docs to learn more about the benefits of ExpressRoute Local.

ExpressRoute Standard Circuit:

An ExpressRoute Standard circuit gives you access to all Azure regions in the same geopolitical area at no additional cost over existing plan charges. For example, in North America, customers can send or retrieve data to or from any Azure region in North America without the need to pay an additional fee on top of their existing plan charges. See Locations and connectivity providers: Azure ExpressRoute | Microsoft Docs for the list of Azure regions associated with each geopolitical area.

ExpressRoute Premium Circuit:

An ExpressRoute Premium circuit gives you access to all Azure regions globally. See FAQ - Azure ExpressRoute | Microsoft Docs to learn more about the benefits of ExpressRoute Premium.

ExpressRoute Direct

With ExpressRoute Direct, customers connect directly to Microsoft's network through a pair of 10 or 100Gbps ports to create ExpressRoute Local, Standard and ExpressRoute Premium circuits.

ExpressRoute Direct contains both a monthly Port fee and, for ExpressRoute Premium circuits, a Premium Circuit fee. Outbound data transfer is applicable to Standard and Premium circuits, and not applicable to Local circuits. ExpressRoute Global Reach Add-On and Global Reach inbound and outbound charges apply to Global Reach circuits.

For details on features included in ExpressRoute Direct, please refer to the ExpressRoute Documentation.

Virtual Network Gateways

Virtual Network gateways are required to access a virtual network when using Azure Private Peering on an ExpressRoute circuit.

Availability Zones

As with all of Azure, we are continuously innovating, upgrading, and refining our virtual network gateways to further increase reliability and availability. By adding support for Azure Availability Zones, we bring increased resiliency, scalability, and higher availability to virtual network gateways. You can deploy VPN and ExpressRoute gateways in Azure Availability Zones by using the new Zone Redundant Gateway SKUs. This physically and logically separates them into different Availability Zones protecting your on-premises network connectivity to Azure from zone-level failures.

*ErGw1AZ, ErGw2AZ, and ErGw3AZ are the zone resilient versions of Standard Vnet Gateway, High Performance VNet Gateway, and Ultra Performance VNet Gateway. The bandwidth thresholds remain the same for the zone redundant gateway.

  • You may have additional charges from your service provider to enable connectivity to ExpressRoute. Please contact your service provider to learn about their pricing.

  • For redundancy purposes, 2 ports (on 2 routers) are included in the monthly fee shown.

  • Please refer to the ExpressRoute Documenation for ExpressRoute peering location to zone mapping.

  • ExpressRoute billing starts when a service key is issued to the customer, and it stops after (1) a customer requests a circuit to be deleted AND (2) the Exchange Provider or Network Service Provider has de-provisioned the circuit.

  • If your ExpressRoute service is active for the entire month, you will be charged the monthly fee regardless of usage. However, if you cancelled your ExpressRoute service during the month, you would only receive a prorated bill for the hours used and data transfer overage incurred.

  • You can increase the port speed at any time without any disruption. You can decrease port speed by deleting the circuit under the existing pricing plan, and re-creating it under the new pricing plan. Please coordinate with your service provider to provision the new circuit.

  • While the specific answer depends on the circuit size, usage and region, the Unlimited Data pricing option would be a better choice if you have high levels of utilization, and the Metered Data pricing option would be preferable for low levels of utilization.

  • You can change your pricing plan from metered to unlimited at any time without any disruption. You can change the pricing plan from unlimited to metered by deleting the circuit under the unlimited pricing plan, and re-creating it under the metered pricing plan. Please coordinate with your service provider to provision the new circuit.

Please refer to the ExpressRoute Technical documentation page for more details.

  • Yes. Please refer to the Office 365 page for guidance, recommendations, and implementation steps for using ExpressRoute with Office 365. Office 365 license must be separately obtained. You will need to purchase an ExpressRoute Premium circuit to use Office 365 with ExpressRoute. Moreover, you will be charged for data transfer (based on consumption) if you choose the ExpressRoute metered pricing plan.

Please refer to the ExpressRoute Technical documentation page for more details.

  • No. You will be billed the ExpressRoute monthly fee (including the premium add-on monthly fee) and the Office365 subscription charge; there is no additional fee for using this service.
