Create an Azure account
To get started, you will first need to create an Azure account if you don’t already have one. You can sign-up for the free trial account and try Azure features for free. After logging in with your Microsoft account, simply fill in your contact and credit card information to sign-up.
Create a virtual machine
After creating your account and signing in, navigate to the Azure Management portal. The management portal is a modern web-based experience where you can manage and configure all of your Azure services. From the new menu at the bottom of the portal, select Compute -> Virtual Machines -> From Gallery.
Select Microsoft SQL Server 2014 from the gallery
You will have the option to select from a library of preconfigured virtual machine images including Windows Server 2012 R2, Server 2008 R2, SQL Server 2014, and more. Select Microsoft SQL Server 2014 from the list and click the arrow to continue through the virtual machine creation process.
Configure your virtual machine
You will have the ability to configure your new Virtual Machine by providing a unique name, selecting the size of the virtual machine, and by providing a username and password. Don’t forget the username and password, since you will need it later to connect to your virtual machine. After providing your configuration settings, just click on the arrow to advance to the next step.
Select a virtual machine mode
From here you can specify the DNS name that will be used to connect to your virtual machine, select a storage account to save your virtual machine, and select your data center. Simply enter in a unique DNS name, select your closest data center, and press the arrow link to proceed to the next step in the wizard. Finally press the check box to complete the virtual machine wizard.
Connect to your virtual machine
After a few minutes your virtual machine will be provisioned. To view the status, click on the Virtual Machines link in the management portal. Once the virtual machine is running, simply select it from the list and click on the Connect button in the management portal. Next, enter the username and password that you provided when creating the virtual machine. Finally, you will be connected through remote desktop directly into your new virtual machine pre-configured with Microsoft SQL Server 2014 CTP1.
