Long term retention of data in Azure Backup is extremely compelling with the new
Protected Instance-based pricing model. By focusing on the machines (instances) that are being protected as opposed to the total backup data, customers can save up to 80% on their Azure bill. The pricing model is comprised of two parts:
- A software management fee, based on protected instances
- The backup storage, billed at Azure Storage prices
The backup data stored in Azure is billed at Block Blob storage rates, and customers can choose the redundancy level—Locally Redundant Storage (LRS) or Geo-Redundant Storage (GRS).
