Since Azure Files became generally available, we’ve consistently heard from our customers that they want to embrace the power and flexibility of the cloud without giving up the locality of their on-premises file server.
We had announced the availability of Linux on-premises and cross-region mounting of Azure Files for the first OS distribution – Ubuntu 17.04, in April.
Azure Files offers fully managed file shares in the cloud through the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol. This is the predominantly used file share protocol for on-premises Windows use cases.
Azure File Storage is a service that offers shared File Storage for any OS that implements the supported SMB Protocol. Since GA we supported both Windows and Linux.
Today we announce the Docker Volume Plugin for Azure File Storage open source on GitHub, allowing you to store persistent data in containers and migrate them between hosts easily with the Linux SMB capabilities of Azure File Storage.
We were excited to announce the general availability of Azure File Storage, Microsoft Azure’s fully managed file shares in the cloud at AzureCon 2015, and I’d like to provide an inside view on how we built the service.
