New security and usability features have been added to Content Delivery Network, as well as additional capacity that will help improve the customer experience.

  • Content delivery network-managed certificate from Akamai will help you provision Azure-managed custom domain SSLs on Azure Content Delivery Network from Akamai endpoints.
  • Bring your own certificate for Azure Content Delivery Network from Verizon allows you to bind your third-party certificates to Azure Content Delivery Network from Verizon endpoints. You’ll be able to add your third-party certificates to Azure Content Delivery Network but will also need to manage the renewal of the same.
  • Network and capacity expansion:
    • Azure Content Delivery Network from Akamai significantly increased its capacity and network performance by increasing its footprint from 405 edge sites to more than 1,200 edge sites. Customers on Azure Content Delivery Network from Akamai will see a performance improvement across the globe.
    • Azure Content Delivery Network from Microsoft also added multiple edge sites to its profile including Atlanta, Honolulu, Berlin, Dubai, Brisbane, and Perth.
    • Azure Content Delivery Network from Verizon also added an edge site in Detroit.
  • DNS Root Apex support for Azure Content Delivery Network: With DNS root apex, you’ll now be able to associate Content Delivery Network endpoints at the domain root. For example, it will be possible to associate contoso.com with constoso.azureedge.net. Previously, customers could only associate subdomains with Azure Content Delivery Network. The feature is supported via integration with Azure DNS.
