General availability: 4 vCore Azure SQL Database managed instances on Gen5 hardware
Posted on Wednesday, June 12, 2019
Four vCore Azure SQL Database managed instances are now available on Gen5 hardware for the General Purpose and Business Critical Service tiers, providing customers a cost-effective way to migrate SQL applications with lower compute and memory requirements to Azure.
The 4 vCore option provides more flexibility to customers in appropriately sizing managed instances based on their application needs and eliminate unnecessary database consolidation on a single, large-size managed instance.
Price of a 4 vCore managed instance is half the price of an 8 vCore instance of the same service tier, which considerably improves the cost effectiveness in production and dev/test scenarios. Visit Azure SQL Database managed instance pricing page for pricing details and managed instance resource limits to learn about technical characteristics of 4 vCore managed instances.

Make smaller instance sizes available completed
It wouldd be great to have smaller instance sizes available - or even a 'basic' tier. this is blocking the route to PaaS at the moment. Most of our customers run on 4/6 cpu cores at most, so cost-wise managed instance is way beyond what is justifiable. Also, its expensive to test. A basic tier would be really useful for POC;s.Anonymous
