Azure Database for PostgreSQL – Flexible Server with managed PgBouncer in preview

Published date: May 12, 2021

PgBouncer, a popular Postgres connection pooling tool, is now available as a built-in option for Azure Database for PostgreSQL – Flexible Server and is supported with both public and private access connectivity. Azure Database for PostgreSQL – Flexible Server uses a process-based model for connections, with each connection consuming a noticeable amount of resources. Since maintaining many idle connections can be costly, PgBouncer helps with mitigating idle connections and also allows you to configure up to 10 thousand connections.

To use the benefit of the built-in PgBouncer connection pooler, you can use the same host name in the connection string and change the port from 5432 to 6432 to connect to PgBouncer, rather than directly to the database server. PgBouncer with Azure Database for PostgreSQL - Flexible Server allows you to use the same benefits as for the rest of the managed service, including regular updates.
