Azure Storage Mover

Accelerate cloud adoption with an end-to-end, managed migration service
Innovate in Azure faster with on-prem and cloud-to-cloud migrations.
OVERVIEW

Do more with your data by simplifying on-premises, hybrid, and multicloud migrations.

  • Eliminate the complexity of managing infrastructure or creating custom scripts for large-scale file migrations. Reduce downtime and lower operating costs with a fully managed service that ensures resiliency, high availability, and streamlined control.
  • Track, monitor, and manage migrations globally from a single pane—and quickly view job progress, errors, and agent orchestration without switching tools. Reduce risks, improve compliance, and maintain confidence during complex enterprise migrations with centralized governance.
  • Free IT teams from time-consuming logistics and complex migrations by replacing manual scripts and point tools with Storage Mover agents that deliver predictable outcomes with minimal configuration.
  • Protect operations and ensure migration compliance with file transfers that preserve structure, permissions, attributes, and metadata. Use metadata-only or recurring sync modes to validate, seed, or update migrations without interrupting daily business.
USE CASES

Move data, modernize faster, and unlock the full value of Azure

Server to server architecture optimized for multicloud scenarios

Minimize latency and optimize performance with agentless copy directly from your source cloud to Azure.

Extensive source-to-target protocol support for diverse workloads

Migrate data directly to Azure Blob Storage or Azure Files from common on-premises and cloud file systems, including Server Message Block (SMB) 2.x and 3.x, Network File System (NFS) 3 and 4, and S3.

Flexible transfer support for one-time migrations or recurring sync jobs

Easily perform lift-and-shift migrations and file shares or schedule recurring transfers.

Metadata-only mode for tests, permission seeding, and compliance

Run test migrations without moving your data. Transfer only folder structures and permissions for easy staging and better migration planning.

Scale and performance across millions of files and folders

Ensure predictable performance on massive, enterprise-scale workloads with reliable transfers tested on up to 500 million files and folders in hybrid scenarios.

Resilient by design with high availability and disaster recovery options

Take advantage of zone-redundant deployments and self-healing design across regions. Maintain availability with automated or custom cross-region failover and disaster recovery support.

Secure, online data transfers with encryption and Azure-based controls

Safeguard sensitive workloads throughout the migration process with enterprise-grade encryption and compliance built in.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

  • Azure Storage Mover is a fully managed service that migrates files and folders from on-premises, AWS S3, and other cloud platforms to Azure Storage. It supports hybrid and multicloud scenarios, enabling secure, scalable, and orchestrated transfers to Azure Blob, Azure Files, and other targets.
  • Azure Storage Mover operates through a two-part architecture:
    • Agent: Deployed on-premises or in a cloud VM, it scans and transfers data directly from source to target.
    • Storage Mover Resource: Hosted in Azure, it orchestrates migration jobs, manages authentication, and tracks progress.
For cloud-to-cloud migrations—such as AWS S3 to Azure Blob—Storage Mover uses Azure Arc connectors to authenticate and access the source cloud without requiring an agent.
    • Managed and secure: Eliminates the need for custom scripts or manual orchestration, integrating with Azure Key Vault with support for private endpoints.
    • Scalable performance: Validated to handle up to 500 million objects per job.
    • Multicloud support: Enables migrations from AWS S3, with plans to support other clouds.
    • Flexible migration paths: Supports SMB and NFS to Azure Files and Azure Blob, as well as Azure-to-Azure (Preview) scenarios.
    • Data can be ingested into all Azure public regions using agents directly from the on-premises source to the target storage account. If you’re using AWS as a source, data is copied server to server from AWS to Azure (without agents).
    • Storage Mover resources can be created in East US, East US 2, West Central US, West US 3, North Europe, Sweden Central. This does not limit ingesting to any target region.
  • You can learn more about the system requirements for deploying an agent in our documentation.
  • Yes, Azure Storage Mover can be configured to route migration data from the agent to the destination storage account over Private Link.
  • Yes, users have the option to configure an HTTPS proxy from the menu. Once configured, all the HTTPS calls route through it.
  • While there’s no limit on the number of files or directories, Storage Mover has been tested on up to 500 million objects/jobs in on-premises scenarios.
  • Yes, data is transferred over HTTPS. Optionally, Storage Mover also supports private link to storage accounts, making it safe for the transfer of customer data.
  • No, for all selected target storage account regions, data always moves from the source directly to the target storage account. Only metadata will go through the region of the Storage Mover resource while moving data from on-premises to Azure.
  • No, Storage Mover is free to use for on-premises to Azure and AWS to Azure scenarios. Standard storage and networking charges apply for transactions.
