Overview
Chaos engineering, made accessible
Every app eventually meets a real outage: a DNS failure, an identity disruption, an availability zone going down. Azure Chaos Studio helps you see how your app responds before your customers do. With Chaos Studio Workspaces, now in preview, you choose a scope and Chaos Studio discovers your resources, recommends the outage Scenarios worth testing, runs them with built-in guardrails, and creates a report for every run. There are no faults to wire up one by one and no scripts to maintain, so resilience testing becomes something every team, and every agent, can do.
Chaos Studio Workspaces is in preview and isn't intended for production use. See the Supplemental Terms of Use for Microsoft Azure Previews.
- Create a Workspace for a subscription, resource group, or service group. Chaos Studio discovers your resources and recommends Scenarios that match them, from DNS and Microsoft Entra ID outages to availability zone down, database failover, cache stampede, and messaging disruption. Pick a template, configure it in minutes, and run it.
- Need something specific? Use the drag-and-drop Scenario designer to combine Actions from the fault library, run them in parallel or in sequence, and model cascading failures. Prefer code? Define Scenarios in Bicep or ARM templates and automate them with the Azure CLI, REST APIs, or SDKs.
- Every Scenario run produces a Scenario report with run details, an Action summary, a timeline, and the execution flow. Download and share it as evidence for architecture reviews, audits, and post-incident retrospectives, and pair it with Azure Monitor to confirm your app recovered the way you expected.
- Bring chaos engineering into the tools where you already build. The Chaos Studio AI plugin works with GitHub Copilot CLI, Azure SRE Agent, and other Model Context Protocol (MCP)–compatible agents. Describe what you want to test in plain language. Your agent helps plan the Scenario, runs it only after you confirm, and writes up what it found. Get the Chaos Studio AI plugin on GitHub.

Frequently asked questions
- Chaos Studio Workspaces, now in preview, is the new way to use Chaos Studio. A Workspace discovers the resources in a scope you choose, recommends real-world outage Scenarios, runs them with built-in guardrails, and generates a Scenario report for every run. Learn more about Chaos Studio Workspaces.
- Chaos engineering is the practice of subjecting applications and services to real-world stresses and failures to build and validate resilience to unreliable conditions and missing dependencies. Chaos Studio makes it accessible by starting you from proven outage Scenarios instead of a blank page.
- Workspaces is replacing Experiments (classic), the legacy resource model. Experiments (classic) remains available, but new features ship only in Workspaces, and only critical fixes, such as security updates, are considered for Experiments (classic). Plan your move with Move from Experiments (classic) to Chaos Studio Workspaces.
- Yes. The Chaos Studio AI plugin brings Chaos Studio into GitHub Copilot CLI, Azure SRE Agent, and other Model Context Protocol (MCP)–compatible agents. Plan, run, and review Scenarios in a conversation. The agent runs a Scenario only after you confirm. Get started on GitHub.
- Chaos Studio Workspaces is in preview. Previews are provided without a service-level agreement and aren't meant for production use. Start in development, test, or staging environments. See the Supplemental Terms of Use for Microsoft Azure Previews.
- Scenario templates cover common real-world failure modes across compute, networking, DNS, identity, data, caching, and messaging, including DNS outage, Microsoft Entra ID outage, availability zone down, database failover, cache stampede, and event-driven messaging disruption. You can also build your own in the Scenario designer. For AKS, test node-level zone resilience with Scenarios. Pod-level faults, including pod network latency, are available through the Chaos Studio extension for AKS (preview). Explore Scenarios and templates.
- You can create a Workspace in East US 2, West US 2, West Central US, North Europe, Sweden Central, UK South, and Japan East, and a Workspace can target resources in any Azure region. See regional availability.
- Each Workspace uses a managed identity, so you control both who can run a Scenario and which resources it can affect. Chaos Studio validates permissions before a run, and you can exclude specific resources from any Scenario. Learn about permissions and identity.
