The free edition of Windows 10 IoT Core is intended to encourage proof of concept projects by enabling you to quickly start building a new device solution. It is serviced through the Semi-Annual Channel which releases feature updates twice a year that include new features along with a cumulative roll-up of security and reliability updates. Internet connected devices will automatically install these feature updates which often isn’t desired for a commercial device. Devices enrolled in Windows 10 IoT Core Services use the Long-term Servicing Channel which provides 10 years of support for specific releases and allows control of updates.
