Get more value from your enterprise data assets
Azure Data Catalog is an enterprise-wide metadata catalog enabling self-service data asset discovery. It’s a fully managed service in Azure. The Data Catalog stores, describes, indexes and provides information on how to access any registered data asset and makes data source discovery trivial. It facilitates collaboration and is designed to help close the gap between those who seek information and those who create it.
In contrast to the traditional metadata management solutions that are typically targeted at IT, Azure Data Catalog focuses on bridging the gap between IT and the business. It allows for crowdsourced annotations that will help empower the users with the knowledge of the data to enrich the system during use by enabling them to capture their knowledge of each data asset as they are discovered. This while IT can still maintain control and oversight as the system evolves and can lock down visibility to selected assets as the need occurs.

Prices are estimates only and are not intended as actual price quotes. Actual pricing may vary depending on the type of agreement entered with Microsoft, date of purchase, and the currency exchange rate. Prices are calculated based on US dollars and converted using London closing spot rates that are captured in the two business days prior to the last business day of the previous month end. If the two business days prior to the end of the month fall on a bank holiday in major markets, the rate setting day is generally the day immediately preceding the two business days. This rate applies to all transactions during the upcoming month. Sign in to the Azure pricing calculator to see pricing based on your current program/offer with Microsoft. A user is defined as any individual that is registered for use of the service. A user can be either a standard user or an administrator. The standard user has permissions to register, annotate, and search for data assets. The administrator has these permissions plus elevated privileges at the service and asset level, granting them the permissions to sign up new users for the service and to delete any asset registered with the catalog regardless of ownership of the particular asset. An individual can be set up as both a user and an administrator. Each individual, identified by their e-mail address, only counts once towards the billing meter.

The Azure Data Catalog Free Edition is intended to provide an end-to-end experience of using the Azure Data Catalog service. It allows any user to register, enrich, understand, discover, and consume data from sources registered with the Data Catalog. Any asset registered is visible to every authenticated user in the tenant.
-
The Azure Data Catalog Standard Edition enables data source discovery at scale, allowing any user to register, enrich, understand, discover, and consume data from sources registered with the Data Catalog. Standard Edition also includes asset-level authorization, allowing asset owners to restrict the ability of other users to discover and annotate registered data assets.

If a user is no longer associated with the organization, the user must be removed from the user list in Azure Data Catalog to prevent billing.
