Announcing SQL Server 2016 Developer image in the Azure Gallery

Posted on June 13, 2016

Principal Program Manager, SQL Server

We’re excited to announce the new SQL Server 2016 Developer Edition image in the Azure Gallery!

SQL Server Developer is a free licensed version of SQL Server that you can use to develop and test SQL Server applications.

The SQL Server 2016 Developer image supports the full set of SQL Server 2016 Enterprise features (In-Memory OLTP and DW, Advanced Analytics, Availability Groups, Row-Level Security, etc.). The image doesn’t have any limits (memory, storage, etc.), but it can’t be used in production environments.

SQL Server Developer works great with your favorite programming languages such as Java, C#, PHP, JavaScript, Ruby, Python, C/C++, etc.

SQL Server Developer is free, so you only need to pay for running the virtual machine. Run on any VM size, changing as needed, from A0 (1 core, 768 MB mem, 1TB disk) to GS5 (32 cores, 448 GB mem, 64TB). Pause the virtual machine when you don’t need it and resume it when you want to maximize cost savings.

The best thing – all our automated experiences (storage configuration, optimization for a targeted workload, automated patching, etc.) work for this image.

Provision a SQL Server 2016 Developer image today and see how Azure is the best platform for SQL Server!
