It's clear that attacks on the national communications infrastructure will occur with much greater sophistication than ever before. Because of this, we continue to develop our networks and systems with security as our first principle and we stay constantly vigilant. To these ends, Microsoft has adopted a zero-trust security architecture in all our platforms, services, and network functions.

Previously, we announced the public preview release of Gateway Load Balancer (GWLB), a new SKU of Azure Load Balancer targeted for transparent NVA (network virtual appliance) insertion supported by a growing list of NVA providers. Today, placing NVAs in the path of traffic is a growing need for customers as their workloads scale.

In this blog, we’ll walk through Azure Cross-region Load Balancer (also known as Global tier of Standard Load Balancer) through a case study with a retail customer. By incorporating Azure Cross-region Load Balancer into their end-to-end architecture, the customer was able to achieve region redundancy, high availability, and low latency for their end applications with quick turnaround time for scaling events while retaining their IPs for TCP and UDP connections.

As the cloud continues to expand into a ubiquitous and highly distributed fabric, a new breed of application is emerging: Modern Connected Applications. We define these new offerings as network-intelligent applications at the edge, powered by 5G, and enabled by programmable interfaces that give developer access to network resources.

For many customers, making outbound connections to the internet from their virtual networks is a fundamental requirement of their Azure solution architectures. Luckily, Azure has just the solution for ensuring highly available and secure outbound connectivity to the internet: Virtual Network Network Address Translation. Virtual Network NAT, also known as NAT gateway, is a fully managed and highly resilient service that is easy to scale and specifically designed to handle large-scale and variable workloads.

Fueled by the rapid expansion of the cloud, 5G is much more than a network upgrade—it will help create a new application paradigm and pave the way for the emergence of a new breed of network-intelligent applications that enable developers to solve problems previously out of reach.

In November 2021, Microsoft and AT&T announced the launch of Microsoft Azure public MEC (multi-access edge compute) with AT&T’s site in Atlanta, Georgia. To light up new compelling applications with Azure public MEC that benefit from low latency 5G connectivity, we are making available a video analytics library under the umbrella of Edge Video Services.
