Document Intelligence uses AI to extract fields, text and data from your documents and forms. It ingests content from forms and documents, applies machine learning technology to identify keys, associated values and tables, and then outputs structured data that includes the relationships within the original file. Document Intelligence classifies documents, extracts fields or key value pairs and structure like tables, selection marks from documents and forms. The service includes the following options:
- Custom Field Extraction – Document Intelligence learns the structure of your documents (invoices, contracts, statements, industry specific records) to intelligently extract fields, text and data. It ingests text from forms and documents to output structured data that includes the fields, tables and content. You can extract information quickly, accurately, and tailored to your specific content, without heavy manual intervention or extensive machine learning expertise.
- Custom Classification/Splitting – Document Intelligence learns from your documents to intelligently classify them into different types. If a file consists of multiple documents of different types, it will also automatically identify document boundaries for further processing.
- Prebuilt – Document Intelligence supports various prebuilt models for common document types. Detect and extract data from receipts, invoices, as well as tax forms, insurance, and health insurance cards using optical character recognition (OCR). Prebuilt models extract information to a defined schema.
- Layout – Detect and extract text and structure (tables, titles, paragraphs, selection marks) from documents using OCR.

Document Intelligence is billed by pages analyzed. When a document is submitted for analysis all pages are analyzed unless a page range is specified with the "pages" parameter in the request.

Document Intelligence has a free tier (F0) that enables you to test all the Document Intelligence features.

Document Intelligence does not have a monthly/yearly subscription, but you can use the commitment-based pricing model for large workloads. See pricing details for additional details.

For training a custom template model, training is free. For training a custom neural model, it is free for the first 10 hours only. To allow customers to train a model with more data for longer period of time to achieve greater quality, if training hours exceed 10 hours, we will charge $3/hour extra for training custom neural models.

While you cannot separate the bills for different models being used, metrics by model type are available in the Azure portal on the metrics tab.
