Azure Purview Data Map

The Azure Purview Data Map is the foundation for managing data governance at cloud scale. Data Map stores metadata, lineage, classifications and other annotations associated with data assets and serves the requests for this information through Apache Atlas APIs or through the applications built on Data Map including Data Catalogue. A search request for the data assets tagged as sensitive or a rendering of a lineage graph in the Data Catalogue are examples of a request served up by the Data Map.

Data Map can be automatically populated at cloud scale and kept up to date with the scanning of data sources registered with the Purview account. The scans can be configured to also classify data based on metadata and content inspection. Data Map comes with built-in features (e.g., Resource Sets) to optimise storage of data assets.

Elastic Data Map

By default, a Purview account is provisioned with a Data Map of at least 1 Capacity Unit. 1 Capacity Unit supports requests of up to 25 data map operations per second and includes storage of up to 2 GB of metadata about data assets.

The Data Map can scale capacity elastically based on the request load. Request load is measured in terms of data map operations per second. As a cost control measure, a Data Map is configured by default to elastically scale within the elasticity window.

A data map operation is a create, read, update or delete of an entity in the Data Map. Examples of an entity include a data asset or a lineage relationship between two data assets. A search request may require multiple operations depending on the assets returned and complexity of the request. Storage size of an entity may vary in size depending on the type of entity and annotations associated with the entity.

Data Map requires an additional Capacity Unit for every 2 GB of metadata storage required. For example, a Data Map with 2 GB of metadata storage is billed at 1 Capacity Unit per hour. If the addition of new data assets increases the size to 2.1 GB, the Data Map is billed at 2 Capacity Unit per hour.

Not available Price
Capacity Unit $- per 1 Capacity Unit Hour

Note: To encourage trial of the Elastic Data Map, we are providing all customers free usage of Data Map from August 16, 2021 to October 31, 2021. Billing for Data Map capacity unit consumption will commence November 1, 2021.

Automated Scanning and Classification

Billing for automated population of the Data Map is serverless and based on the duration of scans or ingestion jobs. Duration of these jobs can vary based on the number of systems scanned, data assets contained in the scanned systems, number of classifications selected, the shape of the data and performance of the system scanned.

Scan or ingestion jobs include scanning for metadata and lineage extraction, classification based on metadata or content inspection, automated ingestion of entities from a Purview client (Azure Data Factory). This does not include addition or modifications of entities using Apache Atlas, which are instead billed based on the Capacity Units driven by request load in terms of operations/second.

Not available Price
For Power BI online Free for a limited time
For SQL Server on-prem Free for a limited time
For other data sources $- per 1 vCore Hour

Note: Azure Purview provisions a storage account and an Azure Event Hubs account as managed resources within the subscription that the Purview account is provisioned in. This is required to support enhanced security features during scanning. This may incur separate charges that in most cases will not exceed 2% of charges for scanning. Refer to the Managed Resources section in the Azure portal within Azure Purview Resource JSON.

Note: Customers using Azure Purview to govern data in other clouds (example AWS, GCP) may incur additional charges due to data transfers and API calls associated with the publishing of meta-data into the Azure Purview Data Map. This charge varies by region. For scanning of data in AWS, refer to the Billing and Management console within the AWS Management Console to view these charges.

Other features

Resource sets are a built-in feature of the Data Map used to optimize the storage and search of data assets associated with partitioned files in data lakes. A customer can turn on Advanced Resource Sets to gain additional enrichment of resource set dataset properties and for customisation of how Azure Purview groups these assets.

When Advanced Resource Sets is enabled, billing for processing the resource set data assets is serverless and based on the duration of the processing, which can vary based on the change in partitioned files and resource set profile configured. If the Advanced Resource Sets feature is disabled, there will be no additional charge for resource set assets.

Not available Price
Resource Set $- per 1 vCore Hour

Note: Resource set processing is run every 12 hours for all the systems configured for scanning with Advanced Resource Sets toggle enabled. Regardless of if "Advanced Resource Sets" is on or off, the data catalogue will have resource set assets representing partitioned data.

Note: To encourage trial of the Advanced Resource Sets enriched processing feature, we are providing all customers free usage from 16th August, 2021, until 31st October, 2021. Billing will commence 1st November, 2021.

Example Scenario:

In addition to the above, here is more information about how pricing works in GA to help estimate costs.

Data Map can scale capacity elastically based on the request load. Request load is measured in terms of data map operations per second. As a cost control measure, a Data Map is configured by default to elastically scale within the elasticity window.

For dev/trial usage:

Data Map (Always on): 1 capacity unit x $- per capacity unit per hour x 730 hours

Scanning (Pay as you go): Total [M] min duration of all scans in a month / 60 min per hour x 32 vCore per scan x $- per vCore per hour

Resource Set: Total [H] hour duration of processing Advanced Resource Set data assets in a month * $- per vCore per hour

  • You will be charged for Purview Data Map capacity units and scanning. To begin using Azure Purview, you will need to provision the Data Map. The Data Map is charged per capacity unit (throughput and metadata storage). You will be charged for the Data Map once you provision the Data Map until you deprovision your Azure Purview instance. Automated scanning and classification is charged per serverless vCore-hour. Scanning of select Power BI and SQL Server assets are free for a limited time. Please see the following FAQs for more details. Data Catalog C0 is free and included with your Data Map. Data Catalogue C1 will be free while in preview.
  • You will only pay per vCore-hour of scanning that you consume. Consumption is rounded up to the nearest minute. Scanning of Power BI and SQL Server assets are free currently for a limited time. For more details, please refer to the below. There are no incremental charges for connectors to different data stores.
  • For a limited time, Azure Purview will have free scanning and classification for on-premises SQL Server that can be connected to Azure Purview through the scanning and classification run-time hosted on-premises. All other SQL Servers using the cloud run-time are not covered under this free scanning.
  • For a limited time, Azure Purview will have free scanning and classification for Power BI online tenants with administrative APIs enabled for use by Azure Purview. Power BI Premium on-premises is not supported at this time.
  • The Data Map is a map of data assets, associated metadata and lineage connecting data assets. A capacity unit is a provisioned set of resources to keep your Data Map up and running. One capacity unit can support approximately 25 operations per second and includes 2 GB of metadata storage. This capacity is used by user experiences in Azure Purview Studio or Apache Atlas APIs.
  • The Data Map stores the business and technical metadata and lineage associated with data assets in a searchable graph format. Searchable graph storage in GB is the metadata storage. 2 GB of metadata storage is included in a single Data Map capacity unit.
  • You can provision a Data Map with capacity unit count of 1 or above. Data Map metadata storage scales linearly in 2GB increments per provisioned Capacity Unit. The capacity of the Data Map cannot be changed after provisioning. As a cost control measure, a Data Map is configured by default to elastically scale up within the elasticity window.
