Migrate to conversational language understanding before Language Understanding (LUIS) is retired on 1 October 2025

Published date: 30 September, 2022

On 1 October 2025, Language Understanding (LUIS) will be retired. Before that date, please migrate to conversational language understanding, a capability of Azure Cognitive Services for Language. Conversational language understanding provides many of the capabilities of LUIS, plus enhancements such as:

  • Enhanced AI quality using state-of-the-art machine learning models

  • Multilingual capabilities that allow you to train in one language and predict in others

  • Built-in routing between conversational language understanding and custom question answering projects using orchestration workflow

  • Access to a suite of features available on Azure Cognitive Services for Language

From 1 April 2023, you won’t be able to create new Language Understanding (LUIS) resources. All Language Understanding resources created before that date will be supported until 1 October 2025.

Required action

To avoid disruptions to your applications that use Language Understanding (LUIS), first review pricing for the conversational language understanding feature of Cognitive Service for Language. Then, before 1 October 2025:

  1. Create a Cognitive Service for Language resource.

  1. Follow the steps to migrate your LUIS applications to conversational language understanding.

  1. If you use the LUIS SDK or REST APIs to query your applications, review the documentation to learn how to call the conversational language understanding APIs and make the appropriate code changes.
