Azure generation 2 virtual machines (VMs) are now generally available

Generation 2 Azure VMs are now generally available. Generation 2 VMs use the new UEFI-based boot architecture, as opposed to the BIOS-based architecture used by generation 1 VMs. With these VMs, you’ll now be able to:
- Build larger VMs (up to 12 TB).
- Provision OS Disk sizes that exceed 2 TB.
Microsoft introduced generation 2 VMs for on-premises Hyper-V users with Windows Server 2012 R2. To simplify the migration process, we’re modernising the Azure infrastructure to support the creation of generation 2 VMs, while continuously improving Azure’s scalability.
To take advantage of these features, create generation 2 VMs in Azure running Windows Server or Linux OS. For a complete list of capabilities, limitations and details associated with the deployment of generation 2 VMs on Azure, please refer to our documentation.
