Automation: Run As account

15 April 2016

You can create an Azure Run As account (service principal) from the Azure portal. When you create a new Automation account in the Azure portal, it automatically creates a new service principal and assigns it the Contributor role-based access control (RBAC) role in the subscription by default. This helps you to quickly start building and deploying runbooks to support your automation needs. By using a Run As account, you can:
  • Provide a standardized way to authenticate with Azure when you're managing Azure Resource Manager resources by using runbooks.
  • Automate the use of global runbooks configured in Azure alerts.
To learn more about creating the Run As account via both the Azure portal and Azure PowerShell, see Authenticate Runbooks with Azure Run As account.
