Azure SQL Data Warehouse, a truly elastic cloud data warehousing service, is your go-to SQL-based view across all your data, making it simple and cost-effective to transform business insights. At approximately 1/10th of the cost of traditional appliance solutions, SQL Data Warehouse delivers more freedom to scale as your business needs grow and change – you only pay for the storage that you use and only the compute that you need, when you need it.
Compute resources are represented by DWUs (Data Warehouse Units). In seconds you can scale up DWUs to answer questions faster and then scale down for cost savings. Unique to Azure SQL Data Warehouse, compute can also be paused when the data warehouse is not in use, further reducing your bill. Storage is provisioned separate from compute to enable you to choose how you want to run your data warehouse. Whether you have a little data and a need for a lot of compute, vice versa, or anywhere in-between, we have you covered. No need to over allocate for your specific data and performance requirements.
Azure Government is available to US government entities to purchase physically and network isolated instances of Azure Government from a Licensed Azure Government Service Provider or Partner with no up-front financial commitment or fee. Or, you can sign up for a free Azure Government Trial.

Data storage and snapshots
Data storage is charged based on Azure Premium Storage rates of $-/1 TB/month ($-/1 TB/hour). Data storage includes the size of your data warehouse and 7 days of incremental snapshot storage.
Note: Storage transactions are not billed. You only pay for stored data and not storage transactions.
Geo-Redundant Disaster Recovery
Optionally, you can choose to have your data warehouse copied to geo-redundant storage for disaster recovery. Storage for geo-redundant copies is billed at Standard Disk RA-GRSs of $-/GB/month.
Azure SQL Database Threat Detection provides an additional layer of security intelligence that is built into the service. It works around the clock to learn, profile and detect anomalous activities indicating unusual and potentially harmful attempts to access or exploit databases.
SQL Database Threat Detection integrates alerts with Azure Security Center, and, each protected SQL Database server will be billed at the same price as Azure Security Center Standard tier, at $15.0/node/month, where each protected SQL Database server is counted as one node. We invite you to try it out for 60 days for free. Please see Azure Security Center pricing page for more details.
- When I create a data warehouse, am I charged immediately?
Yes, once the data warehouse is created, you will be billed hourly for: 1) compute ($-/100 DWUs/month), unless the data warehouse is paused, and 2) 1 TB of storage ($-/1 TB/month).
- When I pause my data warehouse, what am I charged for?
Pausing the data warehouse pauses compute. If your data warehouse was paused for the entire hour, you will not be charged compute during that hour. If your data warehouse was active and then changed to pause during the hour, then you will be charged for that hour of compute. When your data warehouse is paused, you will be charged for storage that includes data warehouse files, 7-days worth of incremental backups and geo redundant copy, if opted in. To learn more, please refer to the documentation.
- How are compute and data storage billed?
Compute and storage are billed separately to make it easier for you to see the level of compute resources consumed. Compute usage is charged on an hour basis. For example, if your data warehouse is active for 12 hours in a month, you will only be billed for the 12 hours that your data warehouse existed. If your data warehouse exists for only 30 minutes in a month, you will be billed for 1 hour.
- What does my data storage bill look like?
Your data storage charge is inclusive of the size of your primary database, plus 7 days of incremental snapshots. Charges are rounded to the nearest TB. For example, if your data warehouse is 1.5 TB and you have 100 GB of snapshots, you will be billed for 2 TB of data at a rate of $-/1 TB/month.
- What do I do if I need more than 1 TB of storage?
Storage is sold in 1 TB allocations. If you grow beyond 1 TB of storage, your storage account will automatically grow to 2 TB.
- Can I opt-out of snapshots?
You can’t opt out of snapshots as this capability provides your data warehouse with data loss and corruption protection.
- What does my storage bill look like if I opt into geo-redundant disaster recovery?
You will receive a separate storage charge for geo-redundant disaster recovery (geo DR), which will be billed at $-/GB/month. For example, if you choose geo DR for a 1.5 TB database, you will be billed for 1.5 TB of geo-DR at a rate of $-/GB/month.
