Cloud-scale job scheduling and compute management

Azure Batch provides job scheduling and cluster management, allowing applications or algorithms to run in parallel at scale.

There’s no charge for Batch itself, only the underlying compute and other resources consumed to run your batch jobs. For compute, Cloud Services, Linux Virtual Machines or Windows Virtual Machines can be utilised by Batch. The standard rates for compute apply and can be viewed below. In addition, Batch allows low-priority virtual machines (VMs) to be used. Reserved Virtual Machine Instances are available when using the Azure Batch Service in User subscription pool application mode.

Low-priority VMs in Batch

Low-priority VMs are available for a much lower price than normal VMs, can significantly reduce the costs of running certain workloads or allow much more work to be performed at a greater scale, for the same cost. However, low-priority VMs do have different characteristics and are only suitable for certain types of applications and workloads. Low-priority VMs are allocated from surplus capacity and therefore availability varies – at times VMs may not be available to allocate, and allocated VMs may occasionally be pre-empted by higher-priority allocations. The availability SLA for normal VMs therefore does not apply to low-priority VMs.

If applications can tolerate interruption, then use of low-priority VMs can significantly lower compute costs. Suitable workloads include batch processing and HPC jobs, where the work is split into many asynchronous tasks. If VMs are pre-empted, then tasks can be interrupted and rerun; job completion time can also increase if capacity drops. Low-priority VMs are initially only available through Azure Batch, which provides job scheduling and resource management for batch processing workloads. Azure Batch pools can contain both normal and low-priority VMs. If low-priority VMs are pre-empted, then any interrupted tasks will be re-queued, and the pool will automatically attempt to replace the lost capacity.

Virtual machines are billed per second, rounded down to the last minute.

The latest generation of A-Series, Av2 Standard, has similar CPU performance and faster disk. Suitable for development workloads, build servers, code repositories, low-traffic websites and web applications, Av2 Standard also works for micro services, early product experiments and small databases.

Network optimised – fast networking with InfiniBand support

Available in selected data centres. A8 and A9 virtual machines feature Intel® Xeon® E5 processors and a 32 Gbit/s InfiniBand network with remote direct memory access (RDMA) technology. Ideal for Message Passing Interface (MPI) applications, high-performance clusters, modelling and simulations, video encoding and other compute or network-intensive scenarios.

The H-series is a new family specifically designed to handle high-performance computing workloads such as financial risk modelling, seismic and reservoir simulation, molecular modelling and genomic research. They are based on the Intel Xeon E5-2667 v3 Haswell 3.2 GHz (3.6 GHz with turbo) with DDR 4 memory. Turbo is always on for H-series instances. Two of the H-series configurations (H16r and H16mr) also carry a second low latency, high-throughput network interface (RDMA) optimised and tuned for tightly coupled parallel computing workloads such as MPI applications.

Available in selected data centres. A10 and A11 virtual machines feature Intel® Xeon® E5 processors. For high-performance clusters, modelling and simulations, video encoding and other compute or network-intensive scenarios. They’re similar to A8 and A9 instance configuration without the InfiniBand network and RDMA technology.

Optimised compute – 60% faster than A-Series, more memory and local SSD

D-Series virtual machines feature solid state drives (SSDs) and faster processors than the A-Series, and it’s also available for web or worker roles in Azure Cloud Services. This series is ideal for applications that demand faster CPUs, better local disk performance or higher memories.

Optimised compute – 35% faster than D-Series, latest generation of CPU

Dv2-Series instances are the next generation of D-Series instances that can be used as virtual machines or cloud services. Dv2-Series instances will carry more powerful CPUs which are on average about 35% faster than D-Series instances, and carry the same memory and disk configurations as the D-Series. Dv2-Series instances are based on the latest generation 2.4 GHz Intel Xeon® E5-2673 v3 (Haswell) processor, and with Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0 can go to 3.2 GHz. Dv2-Series and D-Series are ideal for applications that demand faster CPUs, better local disk performance or higher memories, and offer a powerful combination for many enterprise-grade applications.
