Reserved capacity pricing

Save on Azure database services by pre-committing to fully-managed services.

More capacity, less cost

Achieve significant savings on Azure SQL Database, Azure Cosmos DB and Azure Synapse Analytics. With reserved capacity pricing, you can more easily manage costs across predictable and variable workloads and help optimize budgeting and forecasting.

Azure SQL Database

Save up to 33 percent1 on compute resources and up to 80 percent2 when combined with Azure Hybrid Benefit for SQL Server.

Azure Cosmos DB

Save up to 65 percent3 on provisioned throughput request units per second (RU/s).

Azure Synapse Analytics

Save up to 65 percent4 compared to pay-as-you-go rates by prepaying for your compute data warehouse unit (cDWU) usage.

Azure Cache for Redis

Save up to 55 percent on Premier cache pay as you go pricing.

Azure Database for MySQL

Save up to 67 percent on compute resources with reserved capacity. Learn more.

Azure Database for PostgreSQL

Frequently asked questions

  • You must apply reserved capacity pricing to a minimum of 8 vCores for SQL Database or 20,000 RU/S for Azure Cosmos DB.
  • Purchase a one-year or three-year term directly in the Azure portal, and pay with a single, upfront payment or on a monthly basis. The monthly payment option is available at no extra cost. However, if you’re in a non-US-dollar market, your monthly payment amount may vary depending on the current month’s market exchange rate for your local currency.

  • Depending on your service needs, you may need to provide some of the following information:

    INFORMATION EXAMPLE
    Azure region US East
    Deployment type Single database
    Performance tier General Purpose
Write regions Multiple region writes (Azure Cosmos DB only)
    Hardware platform Gen5
Quantity Reservation size in vCores or request units (RU/s)
    Term 1 or 3 years
  • Get reserved capacity pricing by first choosing a single or shared subscription. The option you select determines how many subscriptions will be eligible for reserved capacity pricing.

If you purchase a reservation tied to a single subscription, reserved capacity pricing will only apply to resources within the selected subscription.

If you select a reservation tied to a shared subscription, reserved capacity pricing can be shared across any subscription in your enrollment as an Enterprise Agreement customer, or your account as a pay-as-you-go customer.

  • Reserved capacity pricing is applied to running SQL Databases on an hourly basis. Your reservation is matched to the compute usage of your running SQL Databases. For SQL Databases that don't run the full hour, the reservation is automatically applied to other SQL Databases matching the reservation attributes. Your discount can also apply to SQL Databases that are running concurrently. If you don't have SQL Databases that run for the full hour that match your reservation terms, you may not get the full benefit of reserved capacity pricing for that hour. Learn more.

  • Reserved capacity pricing is applied to provisioned throughput in terms of request units per second (RU/s) on an hour-by-hour basis. Your discount is automatically applied to other Azure Cosmos DB resources that match the reservation attributes for resources that don't run the full hour. Your discount can also apply to Azure Cosmos DB resources that are running concurrently. If you don't have Azure Cosmos DB resources that run for the full hour that match your reservation terms, you may not get the full benefit of reserved capacity pricing for that hour. Learn more.

  • No action is needed on your part. Matching resources that are already running or newly deployed will automatically get the pricing benefit.

  • Your start and end dates are based on your purchase date and reservation term. Once you’ve reserved capacity, your discount will apply immediately to existing deployments—and any new deployments you add—that match your reservation terms.

  • As an Enterprise Agreement customer, view your reserved capacity usage by visiting the Azure enterprise portal. As a pay-as-you-go customer, please visit the Azure account portal.

  • You’ll no longer receive reserved capacity pricing, but your deployments will continue running and will be billed at the pay-as-you-go rate.

  • Yes, you’ll receive an email notification at least 30 days before your reservation expires. It’s also easy to view your reservation details from the Azure portal.

  • If you need to change your SQL Database reserved capacity reservation to another region, deployment type, performance tier, or term, you can exchange it for another reservation that's of equal or greater value. The term start date for the new reservation doesn't carry over from the exchanged reservation. The 1- or 3-year term starts from when you create the new reservation. To request an exchange, go to your reservation in the Azure portal, and select “Exchange” to create a support request.

If you need to cancel your SQL Database reserved capacity reservation, an early termination fee may apply. Learn more.
