Enhanced management capabilities to release unused subnets and create databases available for Azure SQL Database managed instance
Published date: 24 June, 2019
Azure SQL Database managed instance introduces new options further enhancing its management and automation capabilities. New management options include capability for immediate release of subnet upon deletion of the last managed instance residing in it using Azure portal and API and new options to create instance databases using Azure portal, PowerShell and API.
Upon deletion of the last managed instance in the same subnet, the virtual cluster that has contained instances is kept for customers free of charge for the next 12 hours to allow for faster creation of new managed instances in the same subnet. In case customers do not plan to provision new managed instances in the same subnet and would like to immediately release the subnet for further use, this is now possible through manual deletion of the virtual cluster. Deletion of an empty virtual cluster is available through Azure Portal and programmatically through API resulting in an immediate release of the used subnet.
New options to create instance databases through Azure portal, PowerShell and API along with the existing T-SQL capabilities are now available for managed instance. These options complete the create database experience for managed instance providing customers with ability to programmatically automate creation of instance databases and enable easier usability of these feature through Azure portal.
