Get more value from your enterprise data assets

Azure Data Catalogue is an enterprise-wide metadata catalogue enabling self-service data asset discovery. It is a fully managed service in Azure. The Data Catalog stores, describes, indexes and provides information on how to access any registered data asset and makes data source discovery trivial. It facilitates collaboration and is designed to help close the gap between those who seek information and those who create it.

In contrast to the traditional metadata management solutions that are typically targeted at IT, Azure Data Catalogue focuses on bridging the gap between IT and the business. It allows for crowdsourced annotations that will help empower the users with the knowledge of the data to enrich the system during use by enabling them to capture their knowledge of each data asset as they are discovered. This while IT can still maintain control and oversight as the system evolves and can lock down visibility to selected assets as the need occurs.

Prices are estimates only and are not intended as actual price quotes. Actual pricing may vary depending on the type of agreement entered with Microsoft, date of purchase, and the currency exchange rate. Prices are calculated based on US dollars and converted using London closing spot rates that are captured in the two business days prior to the last business day of the previous month end. If the two business days prior to the end of the month autumn on a bank holiday in major markets, the rate setting day is generally the day immediately preceding the two business days. This rate applies to all transactions during the forthcoming month. Sign in to the Azure pricing calculator to see pricing based on your current programme/offer with Microsoft. • A user is defined as any individual that is registered for use of the service. A user can be either a standard user or an administrator. The standard user has permissions to register, annotate and search for data assets. The administrator has these permissions plus elevated privileges at the service and asset level, granting them the permissions to sign up new users for the service and to delete any asset registered with the catalog regardless of ownership of the particular asset. An individual can be set up as both a user and an administrator. Each individual, identified by their e-mail address, only counts once towards the billing meter.

  • The Azure Data Catalogue Free Edition is intended to provide an end-to-end experience of using the Azure Data Catalogue service. It allows any user to register, enrich, understand, discover and consume data from sources registered with the Data Catalog. Any asset registered is visible to every authenticated user in the tenant.

  • The Azure Data Catalogue Standard Edition enables data source discovery at scale, allowing any user to register, enrich, understand, discover and consume data from sources registered with the Data Catalogue. In addition to all the features of the Free Edition, Standard Edition provides governance capabilities allowing users to take ownership of registered asset for greater control. Standard Edition also includes asset-level authorisation, allowing asset owners to restrict the ability of other users to discover and annotate registered data assets.

  • Azure Data Catalogue Standard Edition is priced at $- per user per month.

The user who signs up for the service will by default become the administrator for the service. Additional administrators can be added during signup or after the provisioning process is complete.

During the initial signup process, the administrator selects either the Free Edition or the Standard Edition. When the Standard Edition is selected, the administrator can then select the quantity necessary to cover the users (standard users and administrators) who will access the service.

  • All billing is applied on a per-month basis. Customers are billed based on the number of users that have been signed up.

  • You can choose to increase the number of units purchased at any time.

If you sign up for the service mid-month, your monthly bill will be based on the number of days remaining in the month.

  • Yes, you can reduce the number of units from the Azure Data Catalogue’s Settings page at any point. The changes will take effect by the following day and be reflected on your bill at the end of the month.

  • You can cancel your subscription to the service at any time via the Settings page of the Azure Data Catalogue portal.

  • Yes, administrators can upgrade from the Free Edition to Standard Edition by changing the pricing selection on the Settings page of the Azure Data Catalogue portal. After you have made your change to Standard Edition, you select the number of units you require and apply the changes. The capabilities offered in the Standard Edition will be available immediately.

  • Yes, administrators can downgrade from the Standard Edition to the Free Edition.

  • If you cancel your subscription during the public preview, any metadata registered with Azure Data Catalogue will be permanently inaccessible, taking effect immediately. The metadata will be retained no longer than 30 days after cancellation.

  • A catalogue object or “data asset” is the metadata representation in Data Catalogue of a real-world data object. Examples include: tables, views, files, reports and so on. Azure Data Catalog supports a wide variety of data sources. A comprehensive list can be found here.

  • If a user is associated with the Standard tier in a month, the user is counted for billing. If a user is no longer associated with the organisation, the user must be removed from the user list in Azure Data Catalog to prevent billing. For instance, if a user left the company, the user account must be disabled in both Azure Active Directory and the Standard tier of Azure Data Catalogue to prevent counted as a valid user for billing.
