Azure Backup security capabilities for protecting cloud backups

Published date: November 23, 2016

There's a strong need to protect production and backup data against sophisticated attacks and have a strong security strategy in place to help ensure data recoverability.

Azure Backup now provides security features that help customers secure their backups and recover data by using cloud backups if production and backup servers are compromised.  These features are built on three principles—prevention, alerting, and recovery—to enable organizations to increase preparedness against attacks and to equip them with a robust backup solution.

  • Prevention: A new authentication layer was added for critical operations like deleting backup data and changing a passphrase. These operations now require a security PIN that's available only to users who have valid Azure credentials.
  • Alerting: Email notifications are sent for any critical operations that affect the availability of backup data. These notifications enable users to detect attacks as soon as they occur.
  • Recovery: Azure Backup retains deleted backup data for 14 days, so users can recover data by using any old or recent recovery points. Azure Backup also maintains a minimum number of recovery points, so there's always a sufficient number of points to recover from.
