Generally available: Azure Policy support for Azure Site Recovery

Published date: 10 January, 2022

Azure Site Recovery (ASR) helps you protect your mission critical applications from outages. Azure Site Recovery offers strongest level of protection from outages while ensuring ease of deployment, cost effectiveness and dependability.

You can now use Azure Policy to enable Azure Site Recovery for your virtual machines (VMs) at scale and ensure organizational standards. Once you have a Disaster Recovery policy created for a given subscription or resource group(s), all new VMs that are added to that subscription or resource group(s) will have Azure Site Recovery enabled automatically. You can do the same for existing VMs in your resource group(s) through Policy Remediation.

To enable Policy for ASR, search for “Site Recovery” or “Disaster Recovery” on the Assign Policy page and select the Policy “Configure disaster recovery on virtual machines by enabling replication via Azure Site Recovery", as shown below:

In addition to enabling replication for VMs at scale, Policy also helps maintain governance and organizational standards. You can monitor Policy Compliance by clicking on the Policy Name on the Policy Assignments page. If any VMs are found to be non-compliant, you can create a Remediation Task that enables replication for them and make the subscription or resource group(s) to be100% compliant.

This functionality is now generally available across all Azure regions. Start using Azure Policy to take advantage of management, monitoring, and governance at scale.
