Frequently asked questions
- Azure offers free egress for customers leaving Azure when taking their data out of the Azure infrastructure via the internet to switch to another cloud provider or an on-premises data center. Azure already offers the first 100 GB/month of egressed data for free to all customers in all Azure regions around the world (see Internet Egress table above). If you need to egress more than 100 GB/month, please follow these steps to claim your credit.
- Yes. Availability Zone is different from Zone.
Zone is a geographical grouping of Azure Regions for billing purpose. Data transfer pricing is based on the Zones. For Zone details, please refer to FAQ below.
Availability Zone is an isolated location inside of an Azure Region, and has its own independent power source, network, and cooling. The physical and logical separation of Availability Zones within an Azure region protects applications and data from zone-level failures.
- You may see your bandwidth pricing listed as zones or regions on your invoice. A sub-region is the lowest level geo-location that you may select to deploy your applications and associated data. For data transfers (except CDN), the following regions correspond to Zone 1, Zone 2, and Zone 3:
Zone 1 — North America and Europe - Canada Central, Canada East, Central US, East US, East US 2, France Central, France South, Germany North, Germany West Central, Italy North, Mexico Central, North Central US, North Europe, Norway East, Norway West, Poland Central, Spain Central, South Central US, Sweden Central, Sweden South, Switzerland North, Switzerland West, UK South, UK West, West Central US, West Europe, West US, West US 2, West US 3
Zone 2 — Asia and Oceana - Australia Central, Australia Central 2, Australia East, Australia Southeast, Central India, East Asia, Japan East, Japan West, Korea Central, Korea South, Qatar Central, Southeast Asia, South India, West India
Zone 3 — South America and Middle East - Brazil South, Israel Central, South Africa North, South Africa West, UAE Central, UAE North
US Gov — US Gov Arizona, US Gov Texas, US Gov Virginia
- No. For example, an Azure SQL database in the same region will not have any additional data transfer costs.
- Yes. Outbound data transfer is charged at the normal rate and inbound data transfer is free.
- We do not charge academic customers for Internet egress provided your institution meets certain eligibility requirements. Academic customers must be an Enrollment for Education Solutions (EES) education customer to be eligible, and the egress charges must be less than 15% of the total monthly consumption bill. Egress is not waived for traffic over ExpressRoute or CDN, in addition to customers using egress-as-a-service applications like MOOCs. For more information, please refer to the EES program page.
