FAQ

  • Users can create an IoT Central trial without an Azure Subscription. A user can only have one active trial at a time. The trial allows users to add up to 5 devices (real or simulated) and lasts for 7 days after activation. During this trial period, customers can test all the features of Azure IoT Central. Users will not be able to create more devices upon reaching the trial limit of 5 devices or the end of the 7-day trial period. The data of the trial application is not retained after the end of the trial period. At any time during the trial, users can attach the trial app to their Azure subscription to remove these limitations and will be billed using the pricing described above.

  • A device that has been registered and has completed the initial connection to Azure IoT Central is an active device and will be counted for the purposes of billing. If a device has been registered but has not completed an initial connection, it will not be counted for the purposes of billing. If a device is no longer in use, it must be explicitly removed to prevent it from being counted for billing.
  • The first 5 active devices within an Azure subscription will not be charged. Beyond that, the device pricing is prorated on an hourly basis. For each hour, the highest number of active devices will be counted and billed.

    Pricing Example

If a customer uses IoT Central and the maximum number of active devices in the first hour is 1,055 devices, the customer will be billed as listed below. The same logic is used for each hour.

$- for the first 5 devices

The next 995 devices will be billed

    (1,000 - 5) * ($- per device/mo) / (744 hours/mo) = $-/hr

The next 55 devices will be billed

    (1,055 - 995 - 5) * ($- per device/mo) / (744 hours/mo) = $-/hr

  • The message volume is pooled across all active devices within a subscription and measured each hour. On average, additional charges are only incurred if every device sends telemetry more frequently than once a minute.

    Pricing example no. 1:

For instance, if you have 100 active devices connected for the entire month, and during an hour, you sent one message every minute per device, you would have sent (100 devices) * (1 message/min) * (60 min/hour) = 6,000 messages/hour

    For 100 devices, 5,000,000 messages are included for the month. This translates to an available capacity of (100 devices) * (50,000 messages/mo) / (24 * 31 hr/mo) = 6,720 messages/hr.

In this case, the usage is less than the included quantity and there are no additional message charges.

    Pricing example no. 2:

For instance, if you have 100 active devices connected for the entire month, and during an hour, you sent two messages every minute per device, you would have sent (100 devices) * (2 message/min) * (60 min/hour) = 12,000 messages/hour

    For 100 devices, 5,000,000 messages are included for the month. This translates to an available capacity of (100 devices) * (50,000 messages/mo) / (24 * 31 hr/mo) = 6,720 messages/hr.

In this case, the usage is more than the included quantity and the charge will be (12,000 - 6,720) * ($- / 1,000,000) = $- /hr

  • Data is retained on a rolling 30-day basis and customers can continuously export their data using the export feature in IoT Central.
  • Customers control the user access to the apps via in-product role-based access. Azure IoT Central does not enforce any specific limits.
