Microsoft Defender for IoT (formerly Azure Defender for IoT)
Defender for IoT delivers unified security for IoT/OT environments, offering two different sets of capabilities depending on whether you need to protect existing IoT/OT environments or are securing new IoT/OT devices that are provisioned and managed through IoT Hub.
Agentless monitoring
Defender for IoT's agentless monitoring capabilities are free of charge for the first 1,000 devices for the first 30 days. Beyond that, customers will automatically be charged per the pricing below. There is no cost for ingesting Defender for IoT alerts and incidents into Microsoft Sentinel.
Organisations will be billed on a monthly basis based on the number of devices that will be secured, using increments of 100, and they can choose either Monthly or Annual subscription options. The Monthly option is designed for organisations where the number of devices is likely to change over time. With this option, as you grow the number of devices in your organization, you can add them to your subscription, or you can reduce the number of devices if needed. This is best for organisations that prioritise flexibility in the pricing model. For organisations where the predictability and consistency of monthly charges are important for budgeting reasons, we offer the Annual subscription option which will ensure that monthly charges are the same each month during the duration of the annual subscription.
Solution | Subscription Option | Price |
---|---|---|
Defender for IoT agentless monitoring | Monthly | $-/month per 100 monitored devices1 |
Annual | $-/annually per 100 monitored devices |

Frequently asked questions
-
Yes. Defender for IoT supports customers that decided to purchase a mix of monthly commitment and Annual Commitment plans.
However, in order to avoid monitoring and enforcement complexities, Defender for IoT will only support a single billing model (either Annual Commitment or monthly commitment) on a single CM instance and a single subscription. Therefore, a CM is used for only one type of subscription (either one/many annual or one/many monthly).
-
No. Both annual and monthly commitment price plans are billed at the end of the month.
-
In IoT/OT environments organisations frequently don’t have an accurate asset inventory which makes picking a subscription option and inputting the number of devices to secure challenging. If you have already run a trial that has visibility to your entire environment you can use the Device Inventory view in the console get an accurate count. If not, you can provide an initial best effort estimate and then as you deploy and start to receive accurate inventory data you can make any applicable adjustments to your subscription.
