Price performance is critical for analytics

Azure tops other cloud providers the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) report from GigaOm*.

Compare cloud analytics TCO for Azure and Google

Azure outperforms Google in both the medium and large enterprise TCO comparisons*. Implementing an end-to-end analytics solution in Azure costs up to 49 per cent less compared to Google.

*Performance, TCO and price-performance claims based on data from a study commissioned by Microsoft and conducted by GigaOm in March 2021 for the Cloud Analytics Platform Total Cost of Ownership report. Analytics in Azure costs up to 49 per cent less than other cloud providers according to the Cloud Analytics Platform Total Cost of Ownership report. Data is taken from Test-DS derived queries, and is based on query execution performance testing of 103 queries per vendor, conducted by GigaOm in March 2021; testing commissioned by Microsoft. The primary metric used was the aggregate total of the best execution times for each query. Three power runs were completed. Each of the 103 queries (99 plus part 2 for 4 queries) was executed three times in order (1, 2, 3, … 98, 99) against each vendor cloud platform, and the overall fastest of the three times was used as the performance metric. These best times were then added together to obtain the total aggregate execution time for the entire workload. Prices are based on publicly available US pricing as of March 2021. Actual performance and prices may vary. Learn more about the GigaOm TCO study.

Compare cloud analytics TCO for Azure and AWS

Azure outperforms AWS in both the medium and large enterprise TCO comparisons*. Implementing an end-to-end analytics solution in Azure costs up to 13 per cent less compared to AWS.

"Data is most powerful when it's accessible and understandable. With this Azure solution, our employees can query the data however they want versus being confined to the few rigid queries our previous system required. It's very easy for them to use Power BI Pro to integrate new data sets to deliver enormous value. When you put BI solutions in the hands of your boots on the ground—your sales force, marketing managers, product managers—it delivers a huge impact to the business."

"Azure SQL Data Warehouse instantly gave us equal or better performance as our current system, which has been incrementally tuned over the last 6.5 years for our demanding performance requirements."

Lara Minor, Senior Enterprise Data Manager, Columbia Sportswear

"We leveraged the elasticity of SQL Data Warehouse to scale the instance up or down, so that we only pay for the resources when they're in use, significantly lowering our costs. This architecture performs significantly better than the legacy on-premises solutions it replaced, and it also provides a single source of truth for all of the company's data."
