This service announcement affects you only if you are running Azure Mobile Services.

We are transitioning from Azure Mobile Services to Azure App Service. While no action is required on your part, please note the management experience will change. You may choose to migrate prior to September 1, 2016 or wait until Azure migrates you.

More details

Over the past couple of years, we have been asked to provide features on Azure Mobile Services that were planned in Azure App Service – features like Hybrid Connections for accessing on-premises SQL services, Staging Slots to allow staging sites and A/B testing, co-located web site, Site Backup and Restore. Rather than duplicate features across multiple services, we consolidated Mobile Services with Azure App Service.

In November 2015, Microsoft released Azure App Service Mobile Apps along with a one-click migration from Azure Mobile Services to Azure App Service Mobile Apps. You can learn about the benefits of Azure App Service over Mobile Services. As a result of the service consolidation, we will be migrating all customers who are running Azure Mobile Services to Azure App Service. Please check the timeline below for reference.

May 2016

Deprecation notices sent (this is what you are reading now, but you may also read about it in service emails we send to each subscription owner).

May 2016

New customers will no longer be able to create Azure Mobile Services. Existing customers will still be able to create new sites if they already have a Mobile Service configured.

August 2016

Creation of a new Azure Mobile Service will be unavailable.

September 2016

We will start migrating Mobile Services sites for you, starting with free sites.

December 2016

All free sites will be migrated.

May 2017

All sites will be migrated and the service will be shut down

We hope you will take advantage of this notification in two ways:

  • If you have created a free mobile service for testing or learning and the mobile site gets no traffic after testing is complete. You can assist us by deleting your mobile service if you are no longer using it. If you are still using the Mobile Service for testing, then please migrate the Mobile Service to Azure App Service at your convenience.

  • We realize that service changes are of particular concern to production sites. You should know that migrating to Azure App Services does not change the domain name nor the underlying code or database of your mobile site. There is a minimal amount of down time associated with the migration (generally less than a few seconds). If you are running a production site, read about the migration process.

    • Use a test site (potentially a clone of your existing site in an alternative region) to test the migration.

    • Migrate your site at a time that is convenient for you.

  • We will start migrating sites that have not already done so on September 1, 2016.  If you wish to control when your migration happens, you should plan to complete your migration by September 1, 2016.

  • If you have a paid Mobile Service, we will not migrate your site until at least May 1, 2017.  We encourage you to migrate yourself on your schedule using the “Migrate your Mobile Service” button on the Azure Classic Portal.

If you need help, we are here to assist. Please post a message on the Azure Community Forums. We also listen to Stack Overflow and Twitter.

We hope you will also take the opportunity to discover the additional features that Azure App Service has to offer.

Regards,

The Azure Mobile team
