{"id":5724,"date":"2014-11-18T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-11-18T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/blog\/docker-cli-for-windows-clients"},"modified":"2025-09-16T08:54:23","modified_gmt":"2025-09-16T15:54:23","slug":"docker-cli-for-windows-clients","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/blog\/docker-cli-for-windows-clients\/","title":{"rendered":"Docker CLI for Windows Clients"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the last several weeks after <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/blog\/2014\/10\/15\/new-windows-server-containers-and-azure-support-for-docker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Microsoft\u2019s partnership with Docker announcement<\/a>, we have added several features to make it easy to integrate Docker containers with Microsoft Azure including Portal support for <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/documentation\/articles\/virtual-machines-docker-vm-extension\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Azure extensions to setup a Docker host on Azure Linux VMs<\/a> and support for private registry on Azure \u2013 see Ahmet Alp Balkan\u2019s blog on <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/blog\/2014\/11\/11\/deploying-your-own-private-docker-registry-on-azure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How to Deploy a Private Docker Registry on Azure<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, I am happy to announce that you can now use a <strong>Docker client directly from your Windows machine to manage containers<\/strong> running on Linux hosts. For more details on how to build and setup up a Docker CLI \u2013 Command Line Interface for Windows, reference: <a href=\"https:\/\/ahmetalpbalkan.com\/blog\/compiling-docker-cli-on-windows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How to compile Docker on Windows<\/a>. Up till today you could only use Linux based client CLI to manage your Docker container deployments or use boot2docker to set up a virtualized development environment in a Windows client machine. Today, with a Windows CLI you can manage your Docker hosts wherever they are directly from your Windows Clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The code for Docker client is integrated into the official Docker <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/docker\/docker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GitHub repository<\/a> and you can follow its active development under <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/docker\/docker\/pull\/9113\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pull Request#9113<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a bonus, this week, following <a href=\"https:\/\/weblogs.asp.net\/scottgu\/announcing-open-source-of-net-core-framework-net-core-distribution-for-linux-osx-and-free-visual-studio-community-edition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Microsoft\u2019s announcement of open sourcing .NET core framework and Linux distribution<\/a>, we have made available a Docker image for ASP.NET on Docker Hub which you can take advantage of to create ASP.NET ready containers from the base image.
