{"id":4203,"date":"2017-01-19T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-01-19T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2025-06-11T06:11:42","modified_gmt":"2025-06-11T13:11:42","slug":"azure-as-automated-partition-management","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/blog\/azure-as-automated-partition-management\/","title":{"rendered":"Automated Partition Management with Azure Analysis Services"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Azure Analysis Services tabular models can store data in a highly-compressed, in-memory cache for optimized query performance. This provides fast user interactivity over large data sets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Large datasets normally require table partitioning to accelerate and optimize the data-load process. Partitioning enables incremental loads, increases parallelization, and reduces memory consumption. The <a href=\"https:\/\/msdn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/library\/microsoft.analysisservices.tabular.aspx\">Tabular Object Model<\/a> (TOM) serves as an API to create and manage partitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Automated Partition Management for Analysis Services Tabular Models <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/Microsoft\/Analysis-Services\/blob\/master\/AsPartitionProcessing\/Automated%20Partition%20Management%20for%20Analysis%20Services%20Tabular%20Models.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">whitepaper<\/a> is available for review. It describes how to use the <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/Microsoft\/Analysis-Services\/tree\/master\/AsPartitionProcessing\">AsPartitionProcessing<\/a> TOM code sample with minimal code changes. It is intended to be generic and configuration driven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sample is compatible with Azure Analysis Services. The following diagram shows an example architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/368408d7-05b5-4c4b-93cf-5b480a5c336d.webp\" alt=\"Azure AS Architecture\" title=\"Azure AS Architecture\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/services\/sql-database\/\">Azure SQL Database<\/a> is used for the configuration and logging database.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/services\/functions\/\">Azure Functions<\/a> is used for execution, and can be triggered in various ways. The following list shows some of the many options available with Azure Functions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">Scheduled using a Timer function CRON expression. In this case, it is not necessary to set up a separate scheduling system.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">Using a webhook request for a WebHook function, or an HTTP request for an HttpTrigger function. This allows integration with existing scheduling systems that can call a URL.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">Triggered from Azure Queue using built-in integration points in Azure Functions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thanks to Marco Russo (SQLBI) and Bill Anton (Opifex Solutions) for their contributions to the whitepaper and code sample.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Whitepaper &amp;
