Today, we are announcing <strong>Azure OpenAI Data Zones <\/strong>for the European Union and United States. Variances in model-region availability have historically required customers to manage multiple resources and route traffic between them, slowing development and complicating management. This feature simplifies generative AI application management by offering the flexibility of regional data processing while maintaining data residency within those geographic boundaries, giving customers easier access to models and higher throughput.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"enterprises-rely-on-azure-for-data-privacy-and-data-residency\">Enterprises rely on Azure for data privacy and data residency<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new Data Zones feature builds on the existing strength of Azure OpenAI\u2019s data processing and storage options.\u00a0Azure OpenAI provides customers with the choices between Global, Data Zone, and Regional deployments. This allows customers to improve throughput, model availability, and simplified management. With all deployment selections, data is stored at rest within the Azure chosen region of your resource.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/aPicture1.webp\" alt=\"Chart with three boxes in an order from left to right that says Global Deployment, Data Zone Deployment, and Regional Deployment. Data is stored at rest within the customer selected region of the Azure resource, while the global backbone ensures optimized response times.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><strong>Data Zones: <\/strong>Introducing Data Zones for customers who need greater data processing assurances while accessing the latest models, combined with the flexibility of cross region load balancing within the customer selected geographic boundary. The United States Data Zone spans all Azure OpenAI regions within the United States. The European Union Data Zone spans all Azure OpenAI regions located within the European Union member states. The new Azure Data Zones deployment type will be available in the coming month.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><strong>Regional deployments: <\/strong>For the strictest levels of data control, regional deployments ensure processing and storage occur within the resource\u2019s geography. This option offers the most limited model availability compared to Global and Data Zone deployments.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since our launch, customers get granular control over their data processing and storage locations upholding <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/explore\/global-infrastructure\/data-residency\/?msockid=2d494b1b376e691736c8580636d4689e#more-information\">Azure\u2019s Data residency promises<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"securely-extending-generative-ai-applications-with-your-data\">Securely extending generative AI applications with your data<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Azure OpenAI integrates effortlessly with hundreds of Azure and Microsoft services that enable you to extend your solution with your existing data storage and search capabilities. The two most common extensions are Azure AI Search and Microsoft Fabric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/products\/ai-services\/ai-search\/?msockid=07d3b19ec408695f3605a283c5b268ef\">Azure AI search<\/a><\/strong> provides secure information retrieval at scale over customer-owned content in traditional and generative AI applications. This allows document search and data exploration to feed query results into prompts, grounding generative AI applications on your data while maintaining Azure scale, security, and control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Microsoft Fabric\u2019s<\/strong> unified data lake, <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/fabric\/onelake\/onelake-overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">OneLake<\/a> enables access to organizations entire multi-cloud data estate from a single, intuitively organized data lake. Bringing all company data into a single data lake simplifies the integration of data to fuel your generative AI application, while upholding company data governance and compliance controls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"enterprises-rely-on-azure-for-safety-security-and-compliance\">Enterprises rely on Azure for safety, security, and compliance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"content-safety-by-default\">Content Safety by Default<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Azure OpenAI comes integrated with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/products\/ai-services\/ai-content-safety\/?ef_id=_k_27aafd51fce612e097609bbea95ff654_k_&amp;OCID=AIDcmm5edswduu_SEM__k_27aafd51fce612e097609bbea95ff654_k_&amp;msclkid=27aafd51fce612e097609bbea95ff654\">Azure AI Content Safety<\/a> <\/strong>by default at no additional cost, ensuring that both prompts and completions are filtered through an ensemble of classification models to detect and prevent harmful content. Azure provides the widest range of content safety tools, including the new <a href=\"https:\/\/techcommunity.microsoft.com\/t5\/ai-azure-ai-services-blog\/azure-ai-announces-prompt-shields-for-jailbreak-and-indirect\/ba-p\/4099140\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prompt shield<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/azure\/ai-services\/content-safety\/concepts\/groundedness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">groundedness detection<\/a> capabilities. Customers with advanced requirements can customize these settings, including adjusting harm severity or enabling asynchronous modes for lower latency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"secure-access-with-managed-identity-through-entra-id\">Secure access with Managed Identity through Entra ID<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Microsoft recommends securing your Azure OpenAI resources with <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/azure\/ai-services\/openai\/how-to\/role-based-access-control\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Microsoft Entra ID<\/strong><\/a> to create <strong>zero-trust access controls<\/strong>, preventing identity attacks and managing access to resources. By implementing <strong>least-privilege principles<\/strong>, enterprises can ensure stringent security policies. Entra ID also eliminates the need for hard-coded credentials, further enhancing security across the solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, <strong>Managed Identity<\/strong> integrates seamlessly with Azure <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/azure\/role-based-access-control\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>role-based access control<\/strong><\/a> (RBAC), providing precise control over resource permissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"enhanced-data-security-with-customer-managed-key-encryption\">Enhanced data security with customer-managed key encryption<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The data stored by Azure OpenAI in your subscription is encrypted by default using a Microsoft-managed key. To further enhance the security of your application, Azure OpenAI enables customers to bring their own <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/azure\/ai-services\/encryption\/cognitive-services-encryption-keys-portal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Customer-Managed Keys<\/a> <\/strong>for encrypting data stored on the Microsoft-managed resources, including Azure Cosmos DB, Azure AI Search, or your Azure Storage account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"enhanced-security-with-private-networking\">Enhanced security with private networking<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Secure your AI applications by isolating them from the public internet using <strong>Azure virtual networks<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/azure\/ai-services\/cognitive-services-virtual-networks?context=%2Fazure%2Fai-services%2Fopenai%2Fcontext%2Fcontext&amp;tabs=portal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Azure Private Link<\/strong><\/a>. This setup ensures that traffic between services remains within Microsoft\u2019s backbone network, allowing secure connections to on-premises resources via <strong>ExpressRoute<\/strong>, <strong>VPN tunnels<\/strong>, and <strong>peered virtual networks<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last week we also announced the release of private networking support for the AI Studio\u2014enabling users to use advanced \u201cadd your data\u201d features via our Studio UI without sending traffic over a public network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"commitment-to-compliance\">Commitment to compliance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are committed to supporting the compliance requirements of our customers across regulated industries including healthcare, finance, and government. Azure OpenAI already meets a wide range of <a href=\"https:\/\/servicetrust.microsoft.com\/DocumentPage\/7adf2d9e-d7b5-4e71-bad8-713e6a183cf3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">industry standards and certifications<\/a>, including <strong>HIPAA<\/strong>, <strong>SOC 2<\/strong>, and <strong>FedRAMP<\/strong>, ensuring that enterprises across industries can trust their AI solutions to remain secure and compliant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"enterprises-trust-azure-reliability-for-production-level-scale\">Enterprises trust Azure reliability for production level scale<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Azure OpenAI service is trusted by many of the world\u2019s largest generative AI applications today including <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/features\/copilot?ef_id=_k_3769a81da098199a9e16cef2edce7d4e_k_&amp;OCID=AIDcmmb150vbv1_SEM__k_3769a81da098199a9e16cef2edce7d4e_k_&amp;msclkid=3769a81da098199a9e16cef2edce7d4e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GitHub Copilot<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/microsoft-365\/copilot\/business?ef_id=_k_9d409531c7c7133f3e56f3de8b1725dc_k_&amp;OCID=AIDcmm9xzw3cn3_SEM__k_9d409531c7c7133f3e56f3de8b1725dc_k_&amp;msclkid=9d409531c7c7133f3e56f3de8b1725dc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Microsoft 365 Copilot<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/security\/business\/ai-machine-learning\/microsoft-copilot-security?msockid=2d494b1b376e691736c8580636d4689e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Microsoft Security Copilot<\/a>. Our own product teams and customers choose Azure OpenAI because we offer an industry leading 99.9% reliability SLA on both the Paygo Standard and Provisioned Managed offerings. We are making that even better with a new latency SLA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"announcing-new-features-latency-slas-with-provisioned-managed\">Announcing new features: Latency SLAs with Provisioned-Managed<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Enabling customers to scale up with their product growth without compromising on latency is important to ensure the quality of your customer experience. Our Provisioned-Managed (PTUM) deployment type already offers the greatest scale with low latency. We are excited to announce a formal latency <strong>service level agreements (SLAs)<\/strong> within PTUM, providing assurances for performance at scale. These SLAs will roll out in the coming month.
