Update management allows you to manage updates and patches for your machines. With Update management, you can quickly assess the status of available updates, schedule installation of required updates, and review deployment results to verify updates that apply successfully. This is possible whether your machines are Azure VMs, hosted by other cloud providers, or on premise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To use Update Management, you will need to take care of a few prerequisites. If you already have an Azure VM, this process is simple:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Navigate to your VM and choose <strong>Update management<\/strong> from the left-hand menu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the next screen, click the<strong> Enable<\/strong> button. This creates a log analytics workspace and Automation account using default values. If you have an existing workspace or Automation account, you can choose those as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/d9110880-6110-4389-9da5-d9966aff3309.webp\" alt=\"2_configure\" title=\"2_configure\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once this is completed, you will see the Update Management view. Although it will take some time for data to populate, this view will give you information about a single VM. There is also a multi-machine view which you can access by clicking <strong>Manage multiple computers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/8c95a597-33a3-424f-90e9-1f1ef2aaab01.webp\" alt=\"3_multi\" title=\"3_multi\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can easily add more machines from this view by selecting either <strong>Add Azure VM<\/strong> or <strong>Add Non-Azure Computer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/7a191042-1d4c-4cf1-9e23-d5bc63b40982.webp\" alt=\"4_multi (1)\" title=\"4_multi (1)\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"get-visibility-into-your-update-compliance-with-update-management\">Get visibility into your Update Compliance with Update Management<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By <a href=\"https:\/\/aka.ms\/winvmupdate\">enrolling machines in Update Management<\/a>, you have access to dashboards reporting on the state of your machines. This is possible whether your machines are Azure VMs, AWS VMs, other cloud providers, or on premise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"deploy-security-updates\">Deploy Security Updates<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To deploy patches to machines, <strong>select Schedule update deployment<\/strong> from the multi-machine view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/5_schedule-1.webp\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This shows a new blade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/08f3ca21-a853-4be2-9c05-27f4181ff122.webp\" alt=\"6_deploy\" title=\"6_deploy\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this blade, you can select computers which should receive updates. If you wish, you can filter <strong>Update classifications<\/strong> to only apply security updates. The update run can be scheduled to run once or on a recurring basis.
