So, what patterns do we have for our modern data warehouse play?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"modern-data-warehouse\">Modern data warehouse<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the convergence of relational and non-relational, or structured and unstructured data orchestrated by <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/services\/data-factory\/\">Azure Data Factory<\/a> coming together in <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/services\/storage\/blobs\/\">Azure Blob Storage<\/a> to act as the primary data source for <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/\">Azure<\/a> services. The value of having the relational data warehouse layer is to support the business rules, security model, and governance which are often layered here. The de-normalization of the data in the relational model is purposeful as it aligns data models and schemas to support various internal business organizations and applications. <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/services\/databricks\/\">Azure Databricks<\/a> can also cleanse data prior to loading into <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/services\/sql-data-warehouse\/\">Azure SQL Data Warehouse.<\/a> It enables an optional analytical path in addition to the <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/services\/analysis-services\/\">Azure Analysis Services<\/a> layer for business intelligence applications such as <a href=\"https:\/\/powerbi.microsoft.com\/en-us\/\">Power BI<\/a> or other business applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/892adc4f-33c6-4422-a0d1-863f32950451.webp\" alt=\"Pattern1_c\" title=\"Pattern1_c\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"advanced-analytics-on-big-data\">Advanced analytics on big data<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here we introduce advanced analytical capabilities through our <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/services\/databricks\/\">Azure Databricks<\/a> platforms with <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/overview\/machine-learning\/\">Azure Machine Learning<\/a>. We still have all the greatness of <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/services\/data-factory\/\">Azure Data Factory<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/services\/storage\/blobs\/\">Azure Blob Storage<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/services\/sql-data-warehouse\/\">Azure SQL Data Warehouse.<\/a> We build on the modern data warehouse pattern to add new capabilities and extend the data use case into driving advanced analytics and model training. Data scientists are using our <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/overview\/machine-learning\/\">Azure Machine Learning<\/a> capabilities in this way to test experimental models against large, historical, and factual data sets to provide more breadth and credibility to model scores.&nbsp; Modern and intelligent application integration is enabled through the use of <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/services\/cosmos-db\">Azure Cosmos DB<\/a> which is ideal for supporting different data requirements and consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/1adb0f98-fe5b-4907-b7cd-f70d107d78bb.webp\" alt=\"Pattern2_d\" title=\"Pattern2_d\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"real-time-analytics-lambda\">Real-time analytics (Lambda)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We introduce <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/services\/iot-hub\/\">Azure IOT Hub<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/services\/hdinsight\/apache-kafka\/\">Apache Kafka<\/a> alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/services\/databricks\/\">Azure Databricks<\/a> to deliver a rich, real-time analytical model alongside batch-based workloads. Here we take everything from the previous patterns and introduce a fast ingestion layer which can execute data analytics on the inbound data in parallel alongside existing batch workloads. You could use <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/services\/stream-analytics\/\">Azure Stream Analytics<\/a> to do the same thing, and the consideration being made here is the high probability of join-capability with inbound data against current stored data. This may or may not be a factor in the lambda requirements, and due diligence should be applied based on the use case.&nbsp; We can see that there is still support for modern and intelligent application integration using <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/services\/cosmos-db\">Azure Cosmos DB<\/a> and this completes the build-out of the use cases from our foundation Modern Data Warehouse pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\"
