For more information, please refer to the blog post, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/blog\/soft-delete-for-azure-storage-blobs-ga\/\">Soft delete for Azure Storage Blobs generally available<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today we are excited to announce the public preview of&nbsp;<strong>soft delete for Azure Storage Blobs<\/strong>! The feature is available in&nbsp;<strong>all regions, both public and private<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When turned on, soft delete enables you to save and recover your data where blobs or blob snapshots are deleted. This protection extends to blob data that is erased as the result of an overwrite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-does-it-work\">How does it work?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When data is deleted, it transitions to a soft deleted state instead of being permanently erased. When soft delete is on and you overwrite data, a soft deleted snapshot is generated to save the state of the overwritten data. Soft deleted objects are invisible unless explicitly listed. You can configure the amount of time soft deleted data is recoverable before it is permanently expired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/ebd591da-d843-4151-baeb-b19548149fcf.webp\" alt=\"storage-blob-soft-delete-overwrite-then-delete (2)\" title=\"storage-blob-soft-delete-overwrite-then-delete (2)\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Soft deleted data is grey, while active data is blue. More recently written data appears beneath older data. When B0 is overwritten with B1, a soft deleted snapshot of B0 is generated.\u200b When the blob is deleted, the root (B1) also moves into a soft deleted state.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soft delete is backwards compatible; you don\u2019t have to make changes to your applications to take advantage of the protections this feature affords. During public preview, calling Set Blob Tier on a blob with snapshots is disallowed.<br>Soft delete generates snapshots to protect your data when it is overwritten. We are actively working on a solution to enable tiering of blobs with soft deleted snapshots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you create a new account, soft delete is off by default. Soft delete is also off by default for existing storage accounts. You can toggle the feature on and off at any time during the life of a storage account. Object-level soft delete is available for all storage account types and all storage tiers. It does not protect against container or account deletions. For more details on prices for Azure Blob Storage in general, check out the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/pricing\/details\/storage\/blobs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Azure Blob Storage Pricing Page<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"getting-started\">Getting Started<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soft delete is supported by the most recent releases of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/portal.azure.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Azure Portal<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nuget.org\/packages\/WindowsAzure.Storage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">.NET Client Library&nbsp;<\/a>(version 9.0.0),&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/azure\/azure-storage-java\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Java Client Library<\/a>&nbsp;(version 7.0.0),&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/Azure\/azure-storage-python\/tree\/master\/azure-storage-blob\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Python Client Library<\/a>&nbsp;(version 1.1.0),&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/azure.github.io\/azure-storage-node\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Node.js Client Library<\/a>&nbsp;(version 2.8.0),&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/powershell\/azure\/install-azurerm-ps?view=azurermps-5.3.0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PowerShell<\/a>&nbsp;(version 5.3.0) and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/cli\/azure\/install-azure-cli?view=azure-cli-latest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLI 2.0<\/a>&nbsp;(version 2.0.27). You can also directly use the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/msdn.microsoft.com\/library\/azure\/dd894041.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Storage Services REST API<\/a>&nbsp;as always. Soft delete is supported by REST API version 2017-07-29 and greater. In general, we always recommend using the latest version regardless of whether you are using this feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/055722a8-8f3a-457f-b372-e8e4c7c4ba4f.webp\" alt=\"storage-blob-soft-delete-portal-configuration\" title=\"storage-blob-soft-delete-portal-configuration\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>To enable soft delete using the Azure Portal, navigate to the \u201cSoft delete\u201d option under \u201cBlob Service\u201d.
