{"id":1894,"date":"2018-12-05T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-12-05T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2023-04-11T15:37:55","modified_gmt":"2023-04-11T22:37:55","slug":"an-easy-way-to-bring-back-your-azure-vm-with-in-place-restore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/blog\/an-easy-way-to-bring-back-your-azure-vm-with-in-place-restore\/","title":{"rendered":"An easy way to bring back your Azure VM with In-Place restore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We are excited to announce <strong>In-Place restore of disks<\/strong> in IaaS VMs along with <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-in\/blog\/simplified-restore-experience-for-azure-virtual-machines\/\">simplified restore improvements<\/a> in Azure Backup. This feature helps roll back or fix corrupted virtual machines through in-place restore without the needs of spinning up a new VM. With the introduction of this feature, customers have multiple choices for IaaS VM restore like <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/azure\/backup\/backup-azure-arm-restore-vms#create-a-new-vm-from-a-restore-point\">create new VM<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/azure\/backup\/backup-azure-arm-restore-vms#restore-backed-up-disks\">Restore Disks<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/azure\/backup\/backup-azure-arm-restore-vms#replace-existing-disks-from-a-restore-point\">Replace disks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Customers can exercise this new capability by choosing the <strong>Replace existing<\/strong> tab in the <strong>Restore Configuration<\/strong> blade. The prerequisite for replacing disks operation is an existence of source IaaS VM. This operation is comprised of the following steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<div style=\"margin-left: 48px\">Azure Backup first takes the snapshot of the IaaS VM before replacing the disks as the replace operation modifies the production VM. The snapshots taken are stored in the <em>Staging location<\/em> provided by the user.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"margin-left: 48px\">On successful completion of step 1, the existing disks connected to the VM are replaced using the selected restore point.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"margin-left: 48px\">In parallel to the step 2, the snapshot created in step 1 is copied to the vault and retained as per the customer specified retention policy.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"626\" height=\"526\" title=\"Screenshot of replace existing under restore configuration\" alt=\"Screenshot of replace existing under restore configuration\" src=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/3e1a2d8c-2e95-4ce4-ba4b-dbd84c1ba278.webp\"><\/p>\n<ol><\/ol>\n<p><strong>Replace existing<\/strong> option is currently supported for unencrypted managed VMs. It is not supported for <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/azure\/virtual-machines\/windows\/capture-image-resource\">generalized VMs<\/a> and for VMs created using <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/resources\/videos\/create-a-custom-virtual-machine-image-in-azure-resource-manager-with-powershell\/\">custom images<\/a>.
