Nobody wants a surprise when it comes to the bill, and this is where <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/services\/cost-management\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Azure Cost Management and Billing<\/a> comes in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019re always looking for ways to learn more about your challenges and how Azure Cost Management and Billing can help you better understand where you\u2019re accruing costs in the cloud, identify and prevent bad spending patterns, and optimize costs to empower you to do more with less. Maybe we scaled up, forgot to shut down a VM, or deployed more resources to meet new requirements. Whatever the reason, cost analysis should be your first stop when you need to break down your costs to understand what you&#8217;re spending and where. Of course, there are also times when you need to download this summarized data for additional reporting and analysis outside the portal. Cost analysis has always allowed you to download your data as CSV or Excel and also offered a link to create an automated export of your raw data. Now, the cost analysis preview takes that a step further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cost analysis preview is an early look at the future of analytics and insights in Azure Cost Management and Billing. There&#8217;s still a lot coming, like charts and filters, but many are finding it to be a better place to review their resource, resource group, subscription, and reservation costs. While the cost analysis preview doesn&#8217;t have all the customization options yet, it does offer a more detailed breakdown of your cost at first glance. That may be the subscriptions and resource groups within your billing account, resources and meters within a resource group, or even amortized reservation costs broken down by resource for&nbsp;more streamlined chargeback. Whatever the need, the cost analysis preview now offers the same familiar download experience with a few enhancements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, you&#8217;ll notice the download pane has tabs allowing you to either download a file, view your data in Power BI, or automate the download. When you <strong>D<\/strong><b>ownload a file<\/b>, you can choose either Excel or CSV, similar to the current experience. But what&#8217;s new is the option to include nested data. This option gives you more control of the data, allowing you to decide whether to include the nested resource groups, resources, or meters in your download. On the Resources view, as an example, downloading without nested details will give you one row for each resource. Downloading with nested details will give you a row for every individual resource meter. This is a lot more data but includes the additional details you may need to break costs down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/e4b668ad-e2a9-4bb0-ad5d-45c3f496eddd.webp\" alt=\"Download a file option available from the cost analysis preview\" title=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may not see the option to <b>Open in Power BI<\/b>. This is because Power BI is only available for Enterprise Agreement (EA) and Microsoft Customer Agreement (MCA) billing accounts and billing profiles. If you select your billing account or billing profile within the scope picker, you&#8217;ll find quick instructions for how to use the <a href=\"https:\/\/go.microsoft.com\/fwlink\/?linkid=2152941\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Azure Cost Management template app<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/go.microsoft.com\/fwlink\/?linkid=2152943\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Power BI Desktop connector<\/a> in Power BI. The scope ID is provided here for convenience when setting things up in Power BI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/a1799b00-5fbd-48d2-bf78-ddf187a027e7.webp\" alt=\"Open in Power BI option available in the Download pane from the cost analysis preview\" title=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lastly, the <b>Automate the download<\/b> tab allows you to either schedule a recurring export to a storage account or integrate with the <a href=\"https:\/\/aka.ms\/costmgmt\/usagedetails?WT.mc_id=acm-micflan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UsageDetails API<\/a> to get raw, unfiltered cost data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/b7cb6a3e-2042-430f-8856-f96ac127d7c0.webp\" alt=\"Download automation instructions for scheduled exports and API integration available in the Download pane from the cost analysis preview\" title=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are just a few of the enhancements available in the cost analysis preview. While there&#8217;s a lot more coming, we&#8217;d love to get your feedback and see what you&#8217;d like to see next. How can we make cost analysis even better for you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"more-management-operations-available-in-configuration\">More management operations available in Configuration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last month, you were introduced to an <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/blog\/azure-cost-management-and-billing-updates-july-2021\/#config\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">updated Configuration screen<\/a> that better-organized configuration settings and bubbled up your billing policy status for Cost Management, Reservations, and Marketplace. This month, you&#8217;ll find some additional commands to help you quickly manage your subscriptions and resource groups without leaving the Cost Management hub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/3889e90d-f2b2-437f-977d-0e3ac45de0f2.webp\" alt=\"2021-08_Config\" title=\"2021-08_Config\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This should help streamline your workflow for any management tasks. Maybe you want to rename a subscription to better represent it in cost analysis or cancel a subscription that you&#8217;re no longer using. Maybe you spotted an expensive resource group that isn&#8217;t being used anymore. All these actions and more are available from Configuration. If you need anything more, simply click the <b>Go to subscription<\/b> command to get into the full management experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let us know what you think about these new commands and the central cost configuration screen as a whole. You can rename or cancel subscriptions, delete resource groups, and more, all from a central configuration screen. Let us know what you think.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><strong>New: Usability updates in the cost analysis preview<\/strong> \u2013 <em>Now available in the public portal<\/em><br>Many people check costs at the beginning of the month to see how the previous month ended. To better assist in this, the cost analysis preview now shows the previous month by default on the first two days of the month. Of course, any other months are one click away using the forward\/back buttons within the date picker. You&#8217;ll also find improved paging controls to better align with the rest of the Azure portal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><strong>View cost for your resources<\/strong><br>The cost for your resources is one click away from the resource overview in the <a href=\"https:\/\/preview.portal.azure.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">preview portal<\/a>. Just click <strong>View cost<\/strong> to quickly jump to the cost of that particular resource.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><strong>Change scope from the menu<\/strong><br>Change scope from the menu for quicker navigation.
