{"id":3288,"date":"2019-07-23T11:00:03","date_gmt":"2019-07-23T18:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/blog\/quantum\/?p=3288"},"modified":"2024-10-10T09:12:44","modified_gmt":"2024-10-10T16:12:44","slug":"the-first-anniversary-of-the-quantum-katas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/blog\/quantum\/2019\/07\/23\/the-first-anniversary-of-the-quantum-katas\/","title":{"rendered":"The First Anniversary of the Quantum Katas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In July 2018 we <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/blog\/quantum\/2018\/07\/23\/learn-at-your-own-pace-with-microsoft-quantum-katas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced<\/a> the Quantum Katas\u2014an open-source project containing programming exercises aimed at teaching quantum computing. This July we\u2019re celebrating the first anniversary of the Katas; let\u2019s look at the how the project grew and evolved during this year.<\/p>\n<p>A year ago, we started with just four katas that covered the most introductory topics of quantum computing, such as superposition and measurement. Since then, 13 new katas were written, more than half of them contributed by our community: students learning quantum computing and just quantum computing enthusiasts! The new katas cover a range of topics, from simple algorithms like teleportation and superdense coding to more advanced applications like solving constraint satisfaction problems using Grover\u2019s search algorithm. If you haven\u2019t looked at the katas recently, check out the full list of the katas <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/Microsoft\/QuantumKatas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/blog\/quantum\/2019\/05\/09\/kata-notebooks-make-quantum-programming-more-approachable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kata Notebooks<\/a> are another important addition to the project: they are the same tasks, presented as Q# Jupyter Notebooks. They can be solved online, without having to install the Quantum Development Kit on your machine. Again, thanks to our community members most of the katas are already available in the new format. You can try them online <a href=\"https:\/\/mybinder.org\/v2\/gh\/Microsoft\/QuantumKatas\/master?filepath=index.ipynb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, Q# Jupyter Notebooks enable a whole world of new possibilities for helping everybody learn quantum computing. These include tutorials that explain a topic using a mix of theory, visualizations, Q# code samples or small demos and programming exercises. The <a href=\"https:\/\/mybinder.org\/v2\/gh\/Microsoft\/QuantumKatas\/master?filepath=tutorials\/DeutschJozsaAlgorithm%2FDeutschJozsaAlgorithmTutorial.ipynb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">first of these tutorials<\/a> offers an in-depth exploration of the Deutsch\u2013Jozsa algorithm, one of the most famous algorithms in quantum computing.<\/p>\n<p>You can read more about the evolution of the Quantum Katas over the past year on <a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/qsharp\/one-year-of-quantum-katas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">our developer blog<\/a>.
