Get started with Azure Backup

Azure Backup is a simple yet powerful service that empowers customers to back up Microsoft workloads to the Cloud.

Create an Azure subscription

If you do not have an Azure Subscription, sign up for a free trial and get access to recovery services.

1. Set up Backup vault

  • Log in to the Microsoft Azure classic portal and create a Backup Vault under the Recovery services.
  • Download the Microsoft Azure Backup Agent and the Vault Credentials file from your backup vault’s Quick Start page.

2. Install and register

  • Install the Microsoft Azure Backup Agent on your on-premises server. Register the server to the Backup service using the vault credentials file.
  • Provide a passphrase to encrypt the data. Make sure you save this passphrase to an external location. In case this key is lost, the data cannot be retrieved. Note that Microsoft has no knowledge of this key.

3. Back up and recover

  • From the Azure Backup app, schedule a backup by specifying what to protect and how often.
  • Backed-up data can be recovered in just a few clicks from the “Recover Data” option in the Backup menu. Select a recovery point and the items to recover. It’s as easy as that.
