Solution architecture: SAP HANA on Azure (Large Instance) Architecture

This architecture diagrams how to configure your infrastructure to run SAP HANA on Azure (Large Instance) that includes the Application Tier in an Azure data centre and HANA in a Large Instance data centre.

This solution is built on the Azure-managed services: Virtual Machines, Storage, ExpressRoute and Virtual Network. These services run in a high-availability environment that is patched and supported, allowing you to focus on your solution instead of the environment they run in.

SAP HANA on Azure

SAP HANA on Azure (Large Instances) run on dedicated blade servers located in a Microsoft Azure data centre. This is specific to the database server.

Virtual Machines

SAP application servers can run on Windows Server, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) and Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL).

SAP on Azure requires that you run your SAP workloads on certified Azure Virtual Machines. SAP requires at least two vCPUs and a ratio of 6:1 of memory to vCPU. Always reference SAP Applications on Azure: supported products and Azure VM types (SAP note 1928533) for the latest information.

Azure storage blobs contain the disks that back up the Virtual Machines, providing long-term storage of unstructured data and executable files. Each SAP system will use Microsoft Azure Blob storage.

Azure ExpressRoute enables communication between your Azure components in the Azure data centre and your SAP HANA on Azure (Large Instance) systems. The cost of this ExpressRoute is included as part of your SAP HANA on Azure (Large Instance).

Virtual Network

Azure Virtual Networks provide the flexibility and security needed to establish reliable connections between your network and the Microsoft Azure network. For SAP workloads, Azure ExpressRoute must be used.
