Azure SQL Data Warehouse introduces Premium Storage for greater performance predictability

We are excited to announce that the Azure SQL Data Warehouse service will move from Standard to Premium Storage to drive greater performance predictability and consistency for query runtimes, especially at higher Data Warehouse Units (DWUs).

We are excited to announce that the Azure SQL Data Warehouse service will move from Standard to Premium Storage to drive greater performance predictability and consistency for query runtimes, especially at higher Data Warehouse Units (DWUs). Starting today, every new data warehouse created will use Azure Premium Disk Storage in most regions where Premium Disk Storage is available. Ultimately, storage in SQL Data Warehouse will be billed in 1TB allocations after the preview period. However, any SQL Data Warehouse customer using Premium Disk Storage during the preview period will continue to be billed based on the current Standard Disk Storage model. Customers with an existing Data Warehouse on Standard Storage will receive email instructions in the next few weeks on how to migrate to Premium Disk Storage.

Data protection

In the coming weeks, we will also introduce Geo-Backups for Premium Disk Storage. Geo-Backups will enable geo-resiliency for your data warehouse by copying your data warehouse every 24 hours to the Azure paired region. You will be able to restore from the Geo-Backup to any region in Azure.

Try Premium Storage today

We are excited about the introduction of Premium Storage. Please try it out, run your most demanding workloads against it, and give us your feedback!
