Application Insights: selecting the time grain

Published date: July 28, 2015

In Azure Application Insights, we’ve extended the Time Range blade, where you select the period covered by a Metrics Explorer or Diagnostic Search blade. Namely, you can select the time grain of your charts. The grain is the time interval represented by a single point on the chart. The value of each point is the average of the measurements whose timestamps fall into the interval that the point represents. Notice that if you increase the grain, some peaks and troughs might become hidden.

Open time range, choose a range, and then choose the time grain or leave it at automatic. Open time range, choose a range, and then choose the time grain or leave it at automatic.

The available grains depend on the time period that you select for the chart.

Monthly> 31 days

All time ranges have the automatic option, which selects a default grain for the time range. If you export a chart to Excel, you’ll get just the displayed points—not all the data points averaged on the chart. We are very interested in hearing about how we are doing, so please submit questions and issues to Forums, bugs to Connect (select Application Insights), and suggestions to User Voice.
